Becca's POV

I quickly sat up and gasped. I could feel beads of sweat on my forehead as I place my hand there. As soon as I was familiar with my surroundings I let out a sigh of relief. Just another stupid nightmare. These weren't just nightmares though....... These were events from my past.

I was about 11 years old.It always started with my parents and I playing a game of Sorry in our small apartment. I was about to win the game until we all heard a knock at the door. Of course, I was confused who would be at the door in this hour at night, but seeing the fearful and unsteady look on my parents face, I knew that they had an idea of who it was.

" Carol, you and Becca stay in our room." my father said as he walked slowly to the door.

" Charlie-" my mother began.

" Carol, you need to go, now." my dad demanded in an authoritative voice.

My mother didn't argue anymore and took my hand. As she started to make our way down the hall I look towards my dad. He looked at me sadly and whispered 'I love you' to both of us. My mother quickly walked into her and dad's room and slammed the door. She locked the door and stood back. I sat on the bed, not sure what to do at this moment. I watched as my mother began to pace back and forth in front of the door biting her nails in the process.

She finally stops and places a hand on top of her head. " I need to help him." she whispers to herself.

" Mom?" I ask in a small voice. " What's going on?"

She turns toward me and attempts to give me a comforting smile. " Baby, there are some things that I can not tell you. I can't tell you because it is for your own protection. Just trust mommy and daddy, okay?"

I nod slowly. What is it that her and my dad can't tell me? She kneels down to beside me and gently takes my hand and holds it with both of her soft hands. She shakily kisses my hand and looks up at me. " I know that you are scared and do not understand, but I need you to be brave for me. Your dad needs me right now. I need you to listen to me closely. I want you to hide in the closet and stay in there no matter what. Can you do that?"

I nod again, listening to my mother. She places her right hand on my cheek and rubs her thumb soothingly. I could see out of the corner of her eye, a single tear trying to escape her eye. I could see that she refused to cry in front of me. She kissed my forehead and pulled me into a warm, tight hug. We sat there for what seemed like hours, but in reality it was only a few seconds. " I love you so much Becca."She pulled away and quickly jogged over to the door. She opened it quickly and shut it behind her refusing to look back. I could hear the lock click on the other side of the door, which made me know that she locked it for me.

There was so many questions popping inside my head. What was happening? Who was at the door? Why are my parents so afraid?I ran into the closet. I place my ear against the wall and tried to listen. All I could hear was muffling in the other. I quickly recognized my parents voices, but the other one was a mystery. He sounded very deep and gruff, almost scary sounding.

The muffles became louder and louder until it was screaming. I placed my hand over my mouth to keep from whimpering. Then, out of nowhere, I heard a loud bang coming from that room. A womanly shriek filled the air. Another bang sounded which made the shrieking stop. My eyes widened and I wanted to scream. Tears started to fall freely down my face. I cried silently to myself in that dark closet.

Not too long after that, I could smell something burning. The smell became stronger every second and I could here cracking coming from the other side of the hall. I quickly sat up and felt the door. It was slightly warm.

" Fire..." I whispered to myself.  I slowly opened the door to see that the entire room was filled with smoke. I knew I had to get out of there ASAP. I ran towards the door and unlocked it. I was greeted by  orange - yellow flames that were on the ground. Knowing this was going to hurt, I ran out the door and down the hall. I could barely breath or see. I coughed and squinted my eyes looking for an exit. I enter the living room where the flames were the strongest. I saw a whole bunch of our chairs, coffee table, and everything that was wood right in the middle of the room. My head started to feel a bit woozy and my arms and legs started to hurt from the burns. I could see the door straight ahead of me. I ran towards the door, but before I could open it I notice something behind me. My head slowly turns to see my mother and father, laying on the floor with bullet holes on the forehead. My tears started to form again. I knew that my parents were truly gone. I will never see them again.

" Goodbye." I choked out. I finally made it out of the apartment before the police came.

I didn't notice that I had started crying until I felt a tear fall on my hand. I quickly wipe them away and sniffed. I slowly stood up from my bed I had made out of wet, old newspapers. By the look of the sky, it was really early in the morning. I am definitely not going back to sleep so I might as well get ready for today. I wonder what this day has in store for me....
