“If it isn’t my not so little sister,” Morgan smiled, as she got into the passenger side of my car. I rolled my eyes, and faked a weak smile.
Morgan was only two years older than me, but about 50 pounds lighter than I was. She was a beautiful caramel color, she had the body of a model and although it may not have seemed like it she was incredibly smart. She graduated 3rd in her class in high school, but dropped out of college a semester in, even though her grades where all B’s.
“If it isn’t my not so big sister,”
“Stop it,” she said blushingly, as we exited the airport.
By the time she would leave I’d probably have an eye problem, because the more she talked the more I rolled my eyes.
“So what specifically are you in town for?” I asked.
“Oh there is a lawyer conference in town,”
“What? You aren’t a lawyer.”
“I know, but my future husband is going to be,”
“You are coming to town on the off chance you find your husband at this conference?”
“Yes,”
“What if you don’t find him?”
She let out a big laugh, like I had said something totally hilarious.
“Honey you are funny, but when you have a body like mine,” she said gesturing to her body, “there are no ‘ifs’ about it. It’s just a matter of when.”
After that we drove home in silence. I was done talking to her. The more I talked to her the worse I felt about myself. I really don’t think Morgan made back handed comments on purpose, but I had enough for the time being.
When we got to my apartment I had to carry all 4 of Morgan’s heavy bags up the stairs.
“Hay Morgan,” Mike smiled as we entered the apartment.
“Who are you?” she asked rather meanly.
“I’m Mike? Remember?” he said confused.
“What?” she asked,” You were hot before now you are downright sexy. Eva why didn’t you tell me he had gotten so hot?”
I huffed in the door way dropping the bags by the door as I dry heaved. Mike blushed and gave Morgan a hug.
“Yeah keep hugging I’m not dying,” I huffed between breaths.
“OH sorry,” Mike apologized as he ran to the door and grabbed two bags.
“What a nice little loft you have.” Morgan said emphasizing the word little.
I rolled my eyes and politely thanked her. We all sat and talked for a bit. Well she and Mike talked, I sat trying to drown out the sound of her shameless flirting with a Lady Gaga song in my head. From what I remember Mike was also going to the law convention with his college law study group, and offered to give Morgan a ride which only made her flirting worse. If there was one thing Morgan loved more than a Michael Kors bag where powerful men. Her list of boyfriends looked like a Forbes list line up.
“Eva!” My thoughts where popped like a balloon by the sharp sound of my sisters voice.
“What?” I asked confused
“I asked what’s new with you?”
“Nothing really still in college, I’m interning at Jackson and Allen, and I’m still dating Oliver.”
She looked at me with pity.
“You are so young and so boring. It’s so sad to see your youth going to waste, interning at that slummy law firm.”
Once again a nice moment was turned sour by her big mouth. Before I had the chance to form a snarky comment. Mark swooped in to save the day.
“She is not ‘wasting’ her life away. She has a 3.8 GPA which is better than most in our class, defiantly better than mine, and we all have to start somewhere. I remember when you were a bucked toothed 13 year old with oily skin and no friends, but look at you know. Jackson and Allen is a stepping stone to bigger and better things for Eva.” He said with a polite smile. There was no venom or contempt in his voice. He sounded friendly and calm.
I was so stunned that all I could do was sit there mouth agape looking wide eyed at Mike. He gave me a knowing look back that said ‘I love you too.’ Morgan was not fazed at all.
“Well we are all entitled to our opinion,” she yawned, “well it’s getting late and that flight from New York has me so tired.”
She excused herself and walked back into my room, as soon as the door closed I gave Mike a big hug.
“Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!” I exclaimed.
He laughed.
“You are more than welcome.”
“I owe you one.”
“Can I ask you a question?”
“What?” I asked confused by how serious his tone was.
“Why did you give her your room? You know you have a bad back from when you almost broke it 9th grade. You had to get that bed especially for your fucked up spine.”
“I don’t wanna argue with Morgan. It is easier just to give her what she wants. I learned that early on in life. “
“You are one of the most head strong women I have ever met. You never step down from a challenge. Don’t let that monster pencil control you.”
I let out a squeaky laugh that caused Mikes straight face to crinkle. We both snorted at the same time.
“I’ll remember that. Now get off my bed for the next two weeks so I can sleep.” I said pushing him, but making no change.
“Why don’t I sleep out here and you can get my bed?”
“I can’t. I don’t want to kick you out of your room for a whole 2 weeks.”
“Well I’m not leaving this couch so…”
“I’m not leaving either.” I said standing my ground.
We sat there eyeing each other for almost 45 minutes until we both broke.
“Damn you Eva. Why do you have to be so head strong?”
“That’s the only strong part about my body. The rest of me is made out of Oreos and pizza.”
He let out a painful laugh.
“I’m so tired I can’t even laugh. “
“Ok why don’t we just share your room?”
His face got bright red. Why was he embarrassed? It’s not like we never slept together before, granted not since 6th grade when we both had the flu and his parents didn’t want to take the chance of him getting his little brother with leukemia sick, but how different could it be?
He cleared his throat loudly.
“Um yeah sure.”
