"Isn't this great?!" Will sighed happily, flopping onto the small sofa in the Wheeler's basement. He and Mike were hanging out at 9pm on a Friday night, 10 minutes after their other friends left.
"What?" Mike asked, grinning, as he licked his sugar coated fingers.
"Just, you know, 5 years ago I never thought we'd grow out of our nerdy D&D phase."
"Will..." Mike said, "We still play D&D. All the time."
"I know, but like, now we're older. You guys have girlfriends. I have a boyfriend!" He chuckled lightly, opening a bag of Jelly Babies.
Mike remembered when Will first told him about Jack, 2 months ago. He was surprised at first, sure he knew Will was gay but he had never shown any interest to the boys at school before.
The look on Will's face was one of pure delight and happiness, as if the months of bullying before hadn't even happened. At the time, Mike was just relieved that Will wasn't as gloomy and upset anymore, but now, as guilty as he felt admitting it, Mike Mike kind of wished Will was still single. It was funny though, because Mike can't think of a good reason why.
"Speaking of Jack, how are things with him?" Mike asked, attempting to keep the conversation running. He loved to see Will smile when he talked about things he liked. Unfortunately, his boyfriend was one of them.
"We're really good. Really really good." Will's smile stretched even wider than it was before. Wow. He must be really happy.
Fucking Jacking. What a bastard.
The last time Mike made Will smile this much was last year when he got him ice cream after a tough day at school because of bullying.
"We're going on a date next Saturday." Will said, popping a Jelly Baby into his mouth. Mike frowned.
"Hey... isn't that when me, you, Dustin and Lucas are having our Only Boys and No Girls day? You know, Operation For Old Time's Sake?" He asked, trying to remember if they changed the date.
"Oh shit!" Will gasped. "Oh my gosh Mike, I totally forgot! I'm so so sorry. It was only a day after we made the plans when Jack asked me and I already forgot. I'm such an idiot. Holy crap I'm such a bad friend." Will continued to ramble, apologising after every second breath.
Mike tried to hide the disappointment on his face. Will was always doing this now. He'd always cancel plans because Jack wanted them to do something together. A month ago, Will skipped AV Club twice in a row because Jack's best friend was ill and he had nobody to sit with at lunch. Last Friday, Will missed the campaign because Jack was going to visit his sick grandma and he wanted to spend a bit more time with him before he left for the weekend. Today, Will had gone the extra mile, and had brought Jack with him to Mike's house to play D&D. This meant that nobody could go full out in the game because then they wouldn't be 'cool' enough for Jack.
Mike and the boys had always forgiven Will for missing out on days like these because now they knew how he felt when they first got girlfriends.
"Will. Will! WILL! Calm down! It's alright, we'll just... reschedule. Ok?" He reassured, but the disappointment was still evident in his voice.
"I'm really sorry Mike. I can cancel if you like, I'm sure Ja-,"
"Will, no, it's fine. Seriously just leave it." Mike sighed. Will still looked upset but both boys said nothing. After around two minutes of uncomfortable silence, Will excitedly stood up. Mike looked up in confusion.
"I know, how about you guys hang out with us." He exclaimed.
Mike grimaced. No thanks."No, not like you guys being 3rd wheelers. You good bring El, and Lucas and Dustin bring Max and Suzie!"
Mike wasn't so sure.
"It could be like a double date!" Will squealed, clapping his hands. "What do you think?!"
Usually Mike would have said no but the look of pure delight on Will's face made his heart melt so instead he said,
"Sure."
