Mike giddily whispered in El's ear, making her laugh quietly. His large hands were were firmly locked within his girlfriend's smaller ones, relaxing on her lap. Every once in a while , Mike would glance over to the boy sitting on the sofa opposite him. The boy was too occupied in his drawing to notice Mike watching him. It was 8:30 pm on the night before Christmas Eve and the three children were enjoying the warmth of the roaring fire in the living room. This was the first time the Byers had returned to Hawkins after moving away a few months ago. Mike, Will, El and the rest of the party usually hung out most of the day but once it got dark, Max, Lucas, and Dustin had to go home while Will and El slept over at the Wheeler's house.
Mike smiled slightly studying his best friend's face, concentration evident on it. As El rambled on about how great school was, he wondered what Will was working on this time. Mike knew Will drew lots of pictures of him. He had guiltily looked through one of his portfolios around a year back to see it was filled with portraits of him. He's probably drawing me now, he thought, a happy smirk resting on his face.
Mike wondered why Will always drew pictures of him. Maybe it was simply the fact that Mike was Will's best friend. Or maybe Will thought Mike had a nice face and made a good model or maybe, Mike thought daringly, Will has a crush on me. Now that was definitely an odd thought. Will couldn't possibly like boys... could he? Or maybe he does. More so, maybe Will does have a crush on him. Mike was surprised to find that the thought didn't bother him as much he thought it would. No... he thought, surely Will doesn't like me like that. But once Mike thought about it he couldn't get the idea out of his head. I mean, it does explain why Will hasn't ever shown any interest to girls, and he does go a little pink when I speak to him, Mike figures. But how can I be sure?
A small plan started to form in Mike's head. A genius experiment that could help Mike know for sure what feelings Will Byers had towards him. Brilliant.
Mike zoned back into the 'conversation' he was having with El. He mentally rolled his eyes while she complained how Jessica Hughes had burnt her neck whilst straightening her hair. Mike pretended to be upset for his girlfriend and put his arm around, stroking her short, brown hair.
"Poor El." He cooed, cringing at his tone of voice. Eleven seemed to like this side of Mike and happily snuggled into his shoulder. Good move, Mike smirked to himself. He risked a small glance towards his best friend but was disappointed to see that his actions hadn't affected him in anyway. Mike decided to take his tests to the next level.
"Does my baby need cheering up." He smirked. El looked confused but was soon laughing as the curly dark haired boy began to tickle her. Loud hysterical shrieks erupted from her mouth as she gasped for breath.
"Mike, Mike- Oh my gosh ha... Mike stop." She guffawed, definitely disturbing her brother. Mike saw Will give the couple a revolted and annoyed look.
Progress, Mike thought. If this doesn't make Will jealous then nothing will. He released his arms from around his girlfriend's stomach and brought them up to her face. He proceeded to smash his lips against, the two loudly making out in front of the embarrassed Byers boy. Mike heard light footsteps leave the room and opened his eyes to see his best friend had disappeared. Oh no, he frowned, pulling away from El. I wanted to make him jealous not make him uncomfortable.
