Camila's POV
The first day of school is daunting for everyone, but it's worse for me. New school, new town, no friends. How am I going to survive? I clutch my class schedule in my hands, searching the hallways for Room 107.
"Okay there's 106 and that should be... wait 109? Where the fuck is 107?" I mutter to myself, truly confused.
A raspy voice comes from besides me. "Woah no need for the profanity new girl. You need help?"
I jump about seven feet in the air and turn to face the stranger. Who just happens to be the hottest person I've ever seen. "Holy shit."
She frowns and tilts her head. "What?"
"What?" I laugh uncomfortably and take a step back. "Gotta go bye!" I'm halfway turned around when she gets my attention again.
"Hey new girl?" She's got a smirk on her smug, beautiful face. "Just go with your gut. Its not that hard." With those inspiring words, she turns and disappears into the crowd.
Groaning in annoyance I just walk straight, letting my feet lead me wherever they wanted to go. If I end up being late I can always use the new girl excuse. When I reach a door, I look up and see that it's 107. My jaw drops in shock. It really worked.
When I open the door, my eyes are instantly drawn to the back row where the beautiful stranger was smirking at me.
The teacher broke through my thoughts and directed me to an empty seat in the middle row, two seats in front of the stranger.
Class went by tortuously slowly. About halfway through, the kid behind me taps my arm and slides a folded paper under my elbow.
I unfold it to see words written in all caps, each letter perfect. HEY NEW GIRL. WANT TO GET OUT OF HERE? I glance behind me and see the stranger staring straight back at me.
Grinning softly, I send her a quick nod. She raises her hand and asks to go to the bathroom. Begrudgingly, the teacher lets her. A couple of minutes pass by and then my name is called over the intercom. Confused, I gather up my bag and walk out of them room. A hand wraps around my wrist and tugs me towards the back of the school.
"What is going on?"
"I went to the office and told them I found your phone outside so they'd call you out of class." She pushes the door open and motions me to go out ahead of her.
My jaw drops in awe. "You're a genius."
She winks. "I know." Walking quickly, she leads me around the corner of the school and into another door. The door led to a staircase, which opened up to the roof.
"Woah." I could see the whole city from up here.
"So tell me about you new girl." She sits on a blanket and motions me to join her.
"Well my name is Camila, I just moved here from Miami. I live with my mom, my dad, and my sister Sofi. And I am clearly an idiot because I skipped class to sit on the roof with someone I met today who honestly scares me a little." I bite my lip when she raises an eyebrow at me, amused at my last sentence.
Her emerald eyes take their time glancing me over and then meeting mine. "I scare you?"
I gulp and avert my gaze. "A little."
Her smirk turns into a genuine grin and she starts laughing. "Well in an effort to relax you a little bit, I'm Lauren. I've lived in the quaint, shitty city my entire life. I live with my adopted mother who is old enough to be my grandfather. And if you're an idiot then I'm an idiot, because I brought you up here knowing damn well this is where the principal comes to smoke."
With that, the door we came out of opens and Lauren tugs me behind an old air conditioning unit. She puts her finger over her lip in a silent shushing motion. I nod quickly, pulse racing. It's either fear of getting caught or in response to Lauren's hand still wrapped around my wrist.
Okay no Camila, you can not have a crush on someone you just met. Get it together.
After twenty minutes, the principal descends back down the stairs and we let out a breath of relief.
"Maybe instead of chilling up here like sitting ducks, we should go off campus. There's a great milkshake place down the road."
Everything in me was telling me that there was no way this could be a good idea, but my gut was still urging me to go.
She can see the indecision across my face and says, "Come on Camila, just go with your gut."
I nod. "Okay sure. Let's go get a milkshake."
Her smile was brilliant, and silenced every bad feeling in my body. "Awesome."
Something happened that day that changed the entirety of my senior year: I got attached to Lauren Jauregui. So attached in fact, that skipping school on Monday's became a regular thing and as the school year progressed we spent our days making out in various parks more often than we actually went to class.
Unfortunately, my last relationship with a girl named Ariana had left a sour taste in my mouth and I adamantly refused to commit to Lauren. I wasn't happy about it, but the idea of trusting her with my heart gave me so much anxiety.
The last week of school was finals, which meant that all of the seniors got free passes to skip, which is how I found myself on Lauren's doorstep at 8am, waving as her adopted mother drove down the driveway and to work.
The door opens and familiar hands wrap around my waist, pulling me inside. I kick the door shut and lean back against Lauren's body. Her arms tighter around me and she rests her chin against my shoulder. I can feel her cheek move as she smiles.
"Hi Lo." I turn my face and kiss the side of her head.
She giggles and snuggles closer to me. As our relationship had progressed, I'd come to realize that she wasn't as badass as she seemed. In fact, she was quite the teddy bear.
I separate from her long enough to fully turn around and then I gave her a proper kiss. The original plan for the day was to go to the mall and then catch a movie, but as her tongue slipped into my mouth and her hands grip my hips, I have a feeling we wouldn't be leaving the house anytime soon.
Walking her backwards, I lay her on the couch and climb on top. Tossing my hair over my shoulder, I start at her lips and kiss my way down her neck. She sits up and pulls her shirt off.
As I leave my mark on her collarbone she whispers something that makes me stop completely. "What did you just say?"
The arousal in her eyes disappears instantly. "Um, I said that I'm in love with you."
I immediately get off of her and, in my haste, end up with my butt on the floor. The negative feelings I'd had about this on the first day return full force. "Lauren... what? We're not even dating."
Okay, maybe not the best thing to say.
She was clearly hurt. "I know but I thought that eventually we'd work through the commitment issues together and..."
"So you were just waiting around until you thought you could fix me?" You are not handling this well Camila.
"Come on Camz, don't be like this. You care about me too, I know it. Don't push me away anymore." She pulled her shirt over her head and even clasps her hand together.
Oh God, she's begging me. I can't do this.
"Just go with your gut. What do you want Camila? Do you want me or not? I'm not just going to sit around here waiting on you anymore."
She said go with my gut, so I did. I ran the three blocks back to my house and then barricaded myself in my room.
