Camila paced around the concrete cell and groaned loudly. "Can I get some water or something?" She peers through the bars at the sheriffs deputy sitting at a desk across the room.
The woman's long dark hair was covering her face, and she was focused on a drawing with music blasting from her headphones.
Rolling her eyes, Camila picks up a tiny rock from the floor of her cell and throws it through the bars at the deputy.
The headphones come off instantly as she rises to her feet. "Hey just what the hell do you think you're doing?"
Camila gives her an unimpressed glare and an eyebrow raise. "Whatever it takes to get your attention. I'm hungry, and quite parched."
The deputy scoffs. "Tough shit. You're in for a double homicide. I'm not buying you food."
The sheriff, a kind old man by the name of Simon, pokes his head out of his office. "Do what she asks Jauregui."
The deputy, Jauregui, gapes across the bull pen at Cabello. "What? But Sheriff- she killed two people!"
Sheriff Cowell sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose. "My office please."
Jauregui groans and follows her boss. "Sir, what is going on? There's five witnesses to the perp killing a local bartender and his wife two days ago."
Cowell shrugs, "You don't know this town like i do Jauregui. Give Cabello a couple more days in the slammer and no one will even remember what happened."
"With all due respect sir, that makes absolutely no sense."
He gestures for his young apprentice to sit. "The Cabello Family is the only thing that keeps this town truly safe. Without Camila and her sister Sofi, some crazy shit woulda taken over a long time ago."
Jauregui has never heard Cowell curse before. "What kind of uh- crazy shit?"
"Long before any people ever came to this town, a darkness settled here. I don't know particulars, and to tell you the truth I don't care too, but the Cabello clan has seemingly made it their mission to stop whatever paranormal forces are at play here."
"Paranormal? Okay, Sheriff, that's crazy talk."
Cowell leans closer, fear lurking in his eyes, "Now you listen to me Jauregui, you wanted the truth and I gave it to you, as simple as I could. I don't know what's really going on, but I know Cabello keeps it from getting any worse. She was a bad seed growing up, and left town long before she was legally able to, but she came back when it was her time. Her precious angel of a sister, Sofia, has always been good at heart and somehow then together makes for a dangerous combo." He leans back in his seat and clasps his hands over her protruding belly.
Jauregui is left to ponder the information just given to her. She has so many questions, ones she knows Cowell can't answer. So she does the only thing she thinks will work; she get Cabello's dinner and hopes that will be enough to soften the other woman up.
"Here you go, cheeseburger with fries and a coke." Jauregui passes the bag of food from the bar across the street through the cell bars.
When Cabello takes it, Jauregui grabs a nearby chair and perches next to the cell. "So Cabello," she begins, before getting cut off.
Her voice is smaller than before, and her head is tilted down. "Call me Camila. I am more than just my last name, you know." Her aggressive demeanor from before had vanished once she got sight of the beautiful deputy. She couldn't help feeling shy.
"Ugh right- Camila, well I just had a few questions." Jauregui clears her throat, preparing to continue, when the front door bursts open.
A younger version of Camila stands there with a curved sword in her hand. "I need Camila now please." She had dirt and blood smeared across her cheeks and a panicky shake as she walked.
