A Threat and an Early Shift

Two Years Later:

Sarah sat in front of me, pushing her food around her plate, ignoring me question. "Sarah, answer me, what happened?"

"He insulted me, so I punched him," was her curt reply.

Ever since we left Blue Moon pack, Bailey's pack, she had been depressed and become reclusive. I had never told her the real reason for leaving, but she knew I was upset. "Well, I'm glad you stood up for yourself, but did you really have hit him so hard?"

She had literally hit the kid so hard he was lifted off the ground. There was a huge welt on his face that was sure to be there for a while. "He had it coming. He's been tormenting me and a few others since school started," she shrugged.

I just nod, knowing this was true. She had told me about him once before. "Well don't worry about it, we won't be here much longer. My jobs almost done." Blake had given me another slightly long term assignment, the first since my first assignment. It was dealing with rogues again. I hadn't gotten involved with any of the packs since the first time, prefering to act alone and, if I really wanted to admit it to myself, I didn't want to dredge up the past. Also, the other assignments had only been a few days each. They were quick, in and out jobs. One had been an idiot who was trying to expose us, who I had shot point blank in the face, another had been another feline, a female, who was killing humans. I had tried to reason with her, but when she went after a little girl, I shot her too. I left a trail of blood and death behind me, where ever I went.

Neither Karen or Sarah ever asked what I was doing when I was away. I was about to let Karen go, she had been increasingly annoying with her advances on me within the past few months. While Bailey might have rejected me, I still wasn't interested in Karen. I also thought that Sarah didn't really need her anymore. Sarah might have been just eleven, but she was extremely mature for her age, and I just felt the need for Karen was gone.

I walked into the other room where she was sitting watching TV. "Karen, I've come to a decision."

She turned to look at me and asked, "And what would that be?"

"I don't think Sarah and I will be needing your services anymore. Would you like me to fly you back to California? Or do you want to go somewhere else?"

She looks at me more intently now. "Well, where are you going? That's where I want to be."

"Karen, I'm sorry, I don't like you like that. I'm extremely glad that you've watched over Sarah these past two years, but thats it," I tell her.

She pouts, and gets up, rubbing her hands up and down my chest. "Are you sure," she says suductively, or at least, I'm guessing that's how it was supposed to sound. I didn't really care.

I push her off of me and stand up. "I'm sure. Go pack your things. I'm sending you back to California."

"You're a real dick, you know that?" she hurls the insult at me.

I just walk away, not even letting it bother me. Sarah comes in at that point, "Finally you got rid of her. When you were gone she was always asking about how to get on your good side. She was annoying and gross." I laugh at what she says. "What, its true. Whenever you gave her money to go out, she would come back with a guy trying to make you jealous, and when you weren't around, she would get angry."

"She brought other people here, without my permission?" I growl.

"Uh, yeah. I'm surprised you never smelled them. I could smell them all over her even when she didn't bring one home. I'm pretty sure she just wanted our money."

I was pissed, but I bought the first ticket I could find online, not caring if it was overpriced or not. When she came down with her bags, I said, "I've already hailed you a cab. You're leaving now." A few minutes later, the cab pulled up and I threw her bags into the trunk and turn and hand her the piece of paper that had her ticket reciept on it. "Hand this to help desk and they will give you your ticket," I say coldly. Without looking back, I turn and walk back in the house, locking the door behind me.
