The days passed, and now it was the day before we had to hand in our ideas.
I was walking walking through the library area, the main building, when I heard a shout.
"I said," The voice was terse. "I am looking for someone. He's an initiate. Can you at least tell me where I can find them?" The voice sounded, familiar, I guess. I thought about it for a second. Beatrice.
"Beatrice?" I said, from behind her. She spun round, and looked at me a little dumbfounded. Maybe it was my book, or my hair, or the glasses, but I didn't know. I noticed the tattoo, the three little birds, running along her colar bone.
She then runs at me, and throws her arms around me.
"You have a tattoo," I say, my voice muffled.
"You have glasses," she retortd. She pulls back and narrows her eyes.
"Your vision is perfect Caleb, what are you doing?" Uh-oh.
"Um..." I glance at the tables around us. "Come on. Let's get out of here." I had to get away from people before she gave something away and I was left factionless.
We exit the building and criss the street. She was jogging to keep up with my pace, but I had always been a fast walker. I take her to the place we call the "Millenium," a strech if land with a few metal sculptures.
I stop, and so does Beatrice, on the concrete around the metal beam, where we, the Erudite, sit in small groups with books or whatever.
I run my hand through my hair, ever so slightly ashamed of my Eruditeness. Then I remove my glasses and shove them away in my pocket. She might be ashamed, but she didn't show it. I mean, she was tattooed, wearing skin tight clothes, and her hair is down. But, she is Dauntless now, I remind myself.
"What are you doing here?" I say, after the awkward silence.
"I wanted to go home," she says, "and you were the closest thing I could think of."
I pressed my lips together, and she adds,
"Don't look so pleased to see me."
"Hey," I say, and I place my hands on her shoulders. "I'm thrilled to see you, okay? It's just that this isn't allowed. There are rules."
"I don't care," She says. "I don't care, okay?" Of course she didn't. She was Dauntless now.
"Maybe you should," My voice gentle, I wear my mask of disapproval. "If it were me, I wouldn't want to get in trouble with your faction."
"What's that supposed to mean?" She asks, but I know she knows. It means her faction is the cruelest of the five, nothing more.
"I just don't want you to get hurt," I remembered the times I thought she was dead, I remember crying, "You don't have to be so angry with me," I tilt my head. "What happened to you in there?"
"Nothing. Nothing happened to me." She closed her eyes and rubbed the back of her neck. She wouldn't tell me if something had happened though. I knew that much.
"You think..." I stare at my shoes. "You think you made the right choice?"
"I don't think there was one," she says. "How about you?"
I look around. People stare at us as the walk past. My eyes skip iver their faces. I am still nervous, mainly because of them and what they will say afterwards. She grabs my arm and pulls me under the arch of the metal beam. We walk beneath its hollow underbelly.
"What is going on?" She asks, folding her arms. She might have noticed my dark circles, a big give away. "What's wrong?"
I press my palm to the metal wall. I decide to tell her what I know.
"Something big is happening, Beatrice. Something is wrong." In my reflection I see my eyes are wide and glassy. "I don't know what it is, but people keep rushing around, talking quietly, and Jeanine gives speeches about how corrupt Abnegation is, almost every day."
"Do you believe her?" Beatrice asks, the question I least wanted to pop up.
"No. Maybe. I don't..." I shake my head. "I don't know what to believe."
"Yes you do," She says sternly. "You know who our parents are. You know who our friends are. Susan's dad, do you think he's corrupt?"
"How much do I know? How much do they allow me to know? We weren't allowed to ask questions, Beatrice; we weren't allowed to know things! And here..." I look up, and continue, "Here, information is free, it's always available."
"This isn't Candor. There are liars here, Caleb. There are people who are so smart they know how to manipulate you."
"Don't you think I would know if I was being manipulated?"
"If they are as smart as you think, then no. I don't think you would know."
"You have no idea what you're talking about!" I say, shaking my head.
"Yeah. How could I possible not know what a corrupt faction looks like? I'm just training to be Dauntless, for God's sake," She says. "At least I know what I'm a part of, Caleb. You are choosing to ignore what we've know all our lives- these people are arrogant and greedy and they will lead you nowhere."
My voice hardens.
"I think you should go, Beatrice."
"With pleasure," she says. "Oh, and not that it will matter to you, but Mom told me to tell you to research the simulation serum."
So she saw Mom.
"You saw her?" I was hurt. "Why didn't she-"
"Because," she says. "The Erudite don't let the Abnegation into their compound anymore. Wasn't that information available to you?"
Before I can answer, tell her I did know, but I just didn't want to believe it, she has pushed passed me, and is soon out of sight. She was right. I thought about what she said, then realised I had a lot of work to do if I was going to research the simulation serum, like Mom had asked.
