It was twelve years ago when Lena met a then 16 year old Jax Teller, who was beginning his first year of prospecting for his father's club, the Sons of Anarchy. Her mother, Leslie Whitney-Daniels, had tried to raise her away from the MC up until then.
Lena's grandfather was one of SAMCRO's patched First 9, along with Clay, Piney, and Jax's father, John Teller. Thomas 'Uncle Tom' Whitney found out that his young, 18-year old daughter had fallen in love with a young black man, from southern California, heading into the army; he had immediately disapproved. And when Leslie fought against it –even going as far as eloping with the love of her life– Lena's grandfather was so angry that he had disowned his very own daughter for not only marrying an outsider but an outsider of a different race.
The summer of the year 1980 had immediately changed it all, the moment his eyes first laid on Lena's the day she was born.
When Lena's father, Mack Daniels, died of cancer 14 years later, she and her mother, with no dime to their names, packed up all of their belongings and reluctantly moved back to Charming. The MC, including Lena's grandfather who had fallen ill that same year, happily took them in. It was a struggle for Leslie when she first came back to Charming. She was still dealing with the death of her husband and now being back home in a town that she hated to take care of her ailing father, was proving to be hard on her.
When Lena's grandfather finally took his last breath the following year, it had made things even harder for Leslie. The MC still took care of the two of them, providing them with their basic needs, but things were never going to be the same. Over the next few years, Lena could only watch in horror, as the beautiful woman that was her mother had turned croweater, before turning into a junkie alcoholic, right up until Lena's 19th birthday when she drunkenly blew her brains out.
From that moment on, Jax had always found himself being there for Lena, for whatever she needed. He looked out for her; protected her. And she fell for him. Hard.
In the beginning, Lena never told Jax how she felt about him. She just watched him go from relationship to relationship, finally falling head over heels in love with Tara. Tara Knowles was the first love of Jax's life from the time they were 16, right up until she left him and Charming nearly 10 years ago. When Tara left, Jax's whole world crashed, and somehow Lena was left to pick up the broken pieces –as he did for her when she lost her mother. In Lena's eyes, Tara was smart and perfect and really pretty. But she was never meant to stay in Charming. Lena knew that Tara couldn't handle the life of being an "Old Lady", but was still very much surprised on the day the future doctor decided to pack up and leave.
Tara's leaving left Jax in a vulnerable state for a few years after, and so he decided to fuck his way through Charming and even through some parts of Stockton and Oakland.
