1776, New York City

"Welcome! What can I get for you today?" I say, tossing a smile onto my tired face. I can hear my fathers coughing all the way downstairs.

"Oh, I'm not here to buy anything," the customer who just walked into the store says. "Do you know where the nearest pub is?"

"Sorry sir, I don't." I turn back to my work. I listen to the man step out of my shop and back outside. Out of the corner of my eye, I see the door to upstairs moving.

"How's business, my dove?" My father greets me, using my old nickname.

"Very slow" I admit, sighing. "I'm so sorry, it's all my fault..."

"Oh my dove, don't blame yourself. You work harder than any other woman in the colonies." My father reassured me. He smiled, before going into a coughing fit.

"Father! You need to get back to bed!" I usher him upstairs and into his room. I head into the kitchen and fill a mug with whiskey.

"Here you are. Drink it slowly" I set the mug down on his nightstand and wait for my father to sit down on his bed.

"Thank you, *cough*, [Y/n]." I nod my head and leave my father's room. I shut his door and head downstairs.

I sigh as I count the money I made today, it's practically nothing. Business has not been good lately. I'm worried I won't have enough money to pay for my father's medicine.

All of a sudden, I hear a noise from outside.  I quickly run to see what it is.

"Hello?" I call out into the moonlight. I hear the noise again, it sounds like a bird's cooing.

I look up at a small tree, sitting on one of the branches is a bright, beautiful dove.

"What the heck?" I yell, a bit louder than I intended. As soon as I laid eyes on the bird, it stood up and began to fly away.

"Don't go!" I exclaim, following the peaceful creature as it soared along the road.

I followed the dove for what felt like hours, even though I knew it wasn't more than 5 minutes. The dove sits down on the steps that lead to the pub entrance.

"Is this it?" I ask, looking around at the dark streets of New York. The dove blinks in response, before flying away. I look up at the pub, and I spy a barely visible sign in the corner of the window. It reads, "Help Wanted! Ask bartender for details"

I nearly jump for joy! Finally, an opportunity to get another job and earn more money for my father. I make a mental note to return to the pub tomorrow, and head back to my house.
