The snow fell down heavily, a bitter wind swept through the air. It was silent, most people had returned to their homes awaiting the warm heat of a burning fire, however, deep in the storm, muffled footsteps were heard, trotting swiftly against the cobblestone. A nursemaid was walking briskly through the frosty air.

The cold wind had somehow snuck into the mansion where it left the young heir, Langris coughing. The nurse had gone to the marketplace to get some healing supplies for the House Vaude's healer and now she was returning with the supplies under her cloak. It had been a miserable trek through the cold and the nurse couldn't be happier to finally see the mansion coming into view.

The nurse abruptly stopped. She swore she had heard something, a sniffle perhaps. The nurse wasn't specialized in mana detecting, no one even attempts for such a boring ability when they could work on attacking or defending, however, even she could sense faint mana close by. The mana was weak and growing weaker. The nurse frowned, her master would be crossed if she arrived late but it was something inhuman to leave a life out in this weather. Taking care not to crush any of the herbs and potions she bought from the market, she began sweeping away the snow.

Her digging quicky revealed underneath a little girl with silver-black hair running past her shoulders. She wore a simple loose shirt and a tiny rumpled skirt, clearly undressed for the weather and it showed in her pale blue lips and constant shivering. The nurse had a horrible thought that the Master had thrown her out but surely even he wasn't that cruel. The girl was barely alive. If another moment had gone by, she might have been gone. The nurse scooped up the unconscious child and hurried inside.

The Head of the House had agreed that it would put shame on the family name if he let a child freeze right outside his doorstep, especially after the loss of his first wife. Even so, he stared at the dripping bundle with disdain. It was clear that he would want to be cleared of the girl as soon as possible.

The nurse wrapped the girl in blankets and set her by the fireplace. Gradually, her shivering eased and the color returned to her lips.

It was right then when the first son, Finral, came over for a peek at what's new.

"Mina? What's that?"

"It's a girl. I'm taking care of her until she recovers," the nurse, Mina answers.

"Girl?" Finral had never seen one before, at least, one of his age. "She cute, when will she get better?

"I don't know, she's been in the snow for quite some time. All we can do right now is warm her up and keep an eye on her,"

"And after that?" Finral was looking forward to days with someone to entertain him.

"That will be up to your father," Mina went over to adjust the blankets on the girl.

"What do you think will he want to do with her?" he pressed.

"She's too young to make it by herself, maybe he'll let her stay until she's older or find a family for her-oh!"

In the few seconds Mina had turned away, the girl had woken, sat up and was now staring at her surroundings with wide eyes, eyes that have seen some things that no one should have experienced.

Finral was the one who broke the silence. "Who are you?".

The girl stared blankly at him and Finral found himself blushing out of embarrassment for reasons hew didn't understand. "I mean, what's your name?"

"Name..?" the girl spoke for the first time, a soft voice like a waterfall.

"I'm Finral, and that lady over there is Mina," he pointed at the nurse. "So who are you?"

The girl blinked as if trying to understand his words. Then slowly, she answered.

"Mirari,"
