(Meanwhile, back in town, Arty was planning to propose to Charlie and his admirers were not pleased. His three followers were triplets. They had long blonde hair and crystal blue eyes.)

Silly Girl #1: This can't be true! I don't believe it!

Silly Girl #2: Why would you go and do a thing like that?

Silly Girl #3 : I can't bear it! I simply can't bear it!

Silly Girl #1: Oh, Arty, say it isn't so!

Arty: It's so.

Silly Girls: WAAAAAAHHHHHHH!

Arty: Girls, I'm just getting married. Don't tell me a little thing like that is going to change your feelings for me?

Silly Girl #1: Oh no!

Silly Girl #2: No!

Silly Girl #3: Never!

Arty: And we'll still have our little rendezvous, won't we?

Silly Girl #1: Oh yes!

Silly Girl #2: Yes!

Silly Girl #3: Always!

Arty: Good.
(rubbing his hands)
Well, if we're going to have a wedding, I guess I'd better propose to the bride!

Silly Girls: WAAAAAAAAHHHH!

Arty: Run along now.
(They go off, still sobbing.)
Charlie! Oh Charlie, is anyone home?
(Charlie comes around the house carrying some spare robot parts. When she sees Arty, she tries to run back around the house.)
Helllloooooo!
(Charlie reappears with a fake smile on her face.)

Charlie: Arty? What a...pleasant surprise.

Arty: Isn't it though? I'm just full of surprises. For you, my dear.

Charlie: A miniature portrait...
(looking closer)
...of you. You shouldn't have.

Arty: Don't mention it. You know, Charlie, there isn't a girl in town who wouldn't love to be in your shoes. This is the day your dreams come true!

Charlie: What could you possibly know about my dreams, Arty?

Arty: Plenty!

[Arty]
You've been dreaming
Just one thing
Nearly all your life
Hoping, scheming
Just one thing
Will you be a wife?
Will you be some he-man's property?
Good news! That he-man's me!
This equation
Girl plus man
Doesn't help just you
On occasion
Woman can
Have their uses too
Mainly to extend the family tree
Pumpkin, extend with me!
We'll be raising sons galore

[Charlie]
Inconceivable!

[Arty]
Each built six-foot-four

[Charlie]
Unbelievable!

[Arty]
Each one stuffed with every Arty gene!

[Charlie]
I'm not hearing this!

[Arty]
You'll be keeping house with pride

[Charlie]
Just incredible!

[Arty]
Each day gratified

[Charlie]
So unweddable!

[Arty]
That you are part of this idyllic scene!

Arty: Picture this. A rustic hunting lodge, my latest kill roasting over the fire. My little wife, massaging my feet, while the little ones play on the floor with the dogs. We'll have six or seven.

Charlie: Dogs?

Arty: No, Charlie! Strapping boys, like me!

Charlie: Imagine that.

[Arty]
I can see that we will share
All that love implies
We shall be the perfect pair
Rather like my thighs
You are face to face with destiny!
All roads lead to
The best things in life are
All's well that ends with me!
Escape me, there's no way
Certain as "Do Re"
Charlie when you marry...

Arty: So, Charlie, what'll it be? Is it "yes "or is it "oh, yes"?

Charlie: I just don't deserve you.

Arty: Who does?

[Arty]
ME!

Charlie: But thanks for asking!
(And she ducks back into the house. The Silly Girls return.)

Silly Girl #1: So, how it'd go?

Arty: You know that Charlie, always playing hard to get.

Silly Girls: She turned you down?

Arty: For now. But I'll have Charlie for my wife. Make no mistake about that!

Silly Girl #1: Well, gee. If she turned him down, then maybe I still have a chance.

Silly Girls: Get out of my way! OW! Stop it! Let go! Oh no, you don't! He's mine!
(The Silly Girls run off. Charlie opens the door of her house and looks around, checking to make sure Arty's gone.)

Charlie: Is he gone? Can you imagine, he asked me to marry him! Me, the wife of that boorish, brainless...

[Charlie]
Madame Arty!
Can't you just see it?
Madame Arty!
His little wife, ugh!
No sir! Not me! I guarantee it!
I want much more than this provincial life!
I want adventure in the great wide somewhere!
I want it more than I can tell!
And for once it might be grand
To have someone understand
I want so much more than they've got planned...
(Charlie's song is interrupted when Stanley runs into the open field. Upon seeing that her father is not with Stanley, she immediately grows worried.)

Charlie: Stanley! What are you doing here? Where's Dad? Where is he, Stanley? What happened? Oh, we have to find him, you have to take me to him!
(Charlie quickly unhitches the cart from Stanley's back, climbs on his back, and heads in the direction of the woods.)
