(Feeling their eyes on her, Charlie whirls around and the townsfolk quickly go back to their activities. Charlie heads for home. Arty and John are close behind Charlie. Arty runs around in front of her, striking a nonchalant pose.)
Arty: Hello Charlie.
Charlie: Hello Arty.
(She keeps going, but he moves to block her way.)
Excuse me.
(She goes around him. He snatches the book out of her hand.)
Arty, may I have my book please?Arty: How can you read this? There's no pictures!
Charlie: Well some people use their imagination!
Arty: Charlie, it's about time you got your head out of these books and paid attention to more important things.
John: Hint...hint.
Charlie: Like you?
Arty: Exactly! The whole town's talking about it. It's not right for a woman to read. Soon she starts getting ideas and...thinking!
Charlie: Arty, you are definitely old school!
Arty: Why thank you, Charlie! Whaddya say we head over to the tavern and get some dinner?
Charlie: What do you say...we don't?
Arty: Come on Charlie, I think I know how you feel about me.
Charlie: You can't even imagine. Arty, please! I have to get inside to help my dad.
(She turns around and heads for her house.)John: That crazy old fool! He needs all the help he can get!
(Arty and John laugh heartily.)
Charlie: Don't talk about my dad that way!
Arty: Yeah! Don't talk about her dad that way!
Charlie: My dad's not crazy! He's a genius!
(Suddenly, an explosion sounds from Charlie's house. Charlie quickly rushes home to help her father, leaving a laughing Arty and John behind.)
(Charlie rushes into the basement where the explosion came from.)
Charlie: Dad! Dad, are you alright?
(Henry, Charlie's father, looked exactly like his daughter. He had short light brown hair, chocolate brown eyes, a petite figure, and was in his mid-30s.)Henry: I'm fine. But I can't figure out for the life of me why that happened! If that isn't the stubbornest piece of...
(He kicks it.)
OW!Charlie: Dad!
Henry: I'm about ready to give up on this hunk of junk!
Charlie: Oh, you always say that.
Henry: I mean it this time! I'll never get this bone-headed contraption to work!
Charlie: Yes, you will. And you'll win first prize at the fair tomorrow.
Henry: Hmmph!
Charlie: And become a world famous inventor.
Henry: You really think so?
Charlie: You know I do. I always have.
Henry: Well, we'd better get cracking. This thing's not going to fix itself. Now let me see, where did I put that dog-legged clencher?
Charlie: Dad.
(Charlie picks up a funny-looking part and holds it out to him helpfully. He takes it from Charlie and uses it to work on the invention.)Henry: So tell me, did you have a good time in town today?
Charlie: I got a new book.
Henry: You do love those books.
Charlie: Well, they take me away to wonderful places where there's adventure and mystery and romance and...happy endings. Dad, if I ask you something, will you answer me honestly?
Henry: Don't I always?
Charlie: Do you think I'm...odd?
Henry: My daughter! Odd?
( He returns with a silly looking work helmet.)
Now where would you get an idea like that?Charlie: I don't know. It's just that - well...people talk.
Henry: They talk about me too.
[Henry]
No, we're not odd, it's true
No family ever saner
Except one uncle who...well, maybe let that pass
In all you say or do
You couldn't make it plainer
You are your mother's daughter; therefore you are class[Charlie]
So I should just accept
I'm simply not like them[Henry]
They are the common herd
And you should take my world
You are unique, cream of the cream
No matter what you do
I'm on your side
And if my point of view is somewhat misty-eyed
There's nothing clearer in my life
Then what I wish and feel for you
And that's a lot
No matter what[Charlie]
No matter what they say
You make me proud I love the funny way
You stand out from the crowd[Henry]
It's my intention my invention
Shows the world out there one day
Just what we've got[Charlie]
No matter what[Henry]
Now some may say all fathers exaggerate[Charlie]
That every daughter's great?[Henry]
You are![Charlie]
And every daughter tends to say her father's tops[Henry]
She pulls out all the stops
To praise him[Both]
And quite rightly![Henry]
No matter what the pain
We've come this far I pray that you remain
Exactly as you are
This is really a case of father knowing best[Charlie]
And daughter too![Henry]
You're never strange[Charlie]
Don't ever change[Both]
You're all I've got
No matter what
