CHAPTER TWO
The fifteen minute car ride to the doctor's passed in silence. I pressed my forehead to the glass of the window, and slept lightly until we pulled into the parking lot. "Time's up. Let's get going here," said my mom. I opened the door and was grateful for the cool breeze that caressed my face. My mother led the way into the waiting room. I stood a few feet behind her as she gave the receptionist my name.
My mom took my elbow and led me over to two chairs in the corner. "You make sure to tell Dr. Wright everything that's wrong with you, okay? I don't want to have to keep waking up just to listen to you vomit." She could be harsh at times, like now, but deep down I knew she cared about me. She was my mother, and she would be with me no matter what.
"Raven? Dr. Wright is ready for you now," a perky nurse in a purple smock-and-pants outfit said, standing in front of me. I followed the nurse into a room with teddy bear wallpaper, my mother in tow. Why I still went to a children's doctor, I didn't know. "You don't need to strip down, so just hop up on the seat, and the doctor will be in in a moment," she said.
I don't understand why they say that the doctor is ready, when he clearly isn't-judging by the lack of doctor in the room.
The only thing I could concentrate on was the constant tap, tap, tap of my mother's shoe on the tile floor. Tap, tap, tap. Tap, tap, tap. It was suddenly very irritating. "Mom," I said quickly, coming out a lot sharper than I meant it to. She sent a glare my way that had the phrase 'if looks could kill' running through my head. "Don't you talk to me that way, Raven. I am the mother, you are the daughter, and you show respect," she said. I sighed. "I only wanted you to stop tapping," I mumbled.
I was saved from another scolding by the entrance of the doctor. "Hello Mrs. Jones, Ms. Jones," he said, shaking each of our hands. He sat down on his stool, and pushed himself closer to my seat. "So, Raven, I hear you're having some troubles. How 'bout you tell me what's been happening," he said, pulling out a pen and a pad of paper, seemingly out of nowhere.
"Well, the main problem I've been having is the constant vomiting. I've been vomiting at all hours of the night, and I haven't had much sleep because of it. I've noticed I've been a lot crabbier lately, which is probably from the lack of sleep."
He nodded, his pen flying over the paper. "I see. And how long has this been going on?" I thought for a moment. Today being Saturday, this starting about Wednesday... "I'd say about four days." He nodded again, quickly scribbling it down. "Have you been eating any strange foods lately? Eating too much, too little? Are you eating at regular times?" he fired questions at me like there was no tomorrow. "No, I don't think so. I've been eating the same things I usually do, at the same times and in the same amounts," I replied. "Hmm, I see. Does anything else, other than nausea, seem to be wrong? Headache, fever, unusual weight gain even?" I had to think about that one. "I'll get the occasional headache, but that could be from school and lack of sleep. My weight has stayed roughly the same; maybe up a few pounds, but nothing too bad." I didn't feel it was necessary to tell him that I had gained ten pounds in the past three months. It was a little embarrassing, and I've been trying to work it back off. I didn't feel it was anything to worry about.
"And is your menstrual cycle regular?" he asked. Way to go from normal to awkward in three seconds. I felt a small blush rising on my cheeks. "Um, yeah, I guess it's been fine. Kind of lighter than usual..." I trailed off, realizing what I was saying. The blush on my cheeks deepened.
He smiled kindly. "It's okay to be embarrassed. But just know that I am a professional, and I try my best not to make you feel uncomfortable," he said. Then why the hell did you ask me about my period? I thought.
He cleared his throat, and shifted like he was uncomfortable. "Are you sexually active?" My mouth fell open, making a small popping noise. I couldn't help it, but I started to laugh. "What does that have to do with anything?" I asked.
He shifted again. "Well I have a theory. But of course some tests will have to be done, to be sure." I felt my eyes widen. "You don't think I have cancer, do you?" I all but shrieked. "No, no, no," he hurried to say. "I need to know whether or not you've been sexually active, Raven."
A blush crept its way back up to my face. "Geez, Doc, I'm fifteen."
"Raven, I need a yes or a no."
"Raven you answer this doctor right now!" My head whipped around to see my mother glaring at me with such fury as I had never seen before. "O-of course I'm not sexually active. I'm fifteen for Pete's sake!" I said. I couldn't help but feel hurt that my own mother would even think that of me. Dr. Wright nodded, but he still looked uncomfortable. "What? Spit it out Doc." I said.
I heard a loud crack, and felt my head get snapped back into the wall behind me. "You watch your tongue, young lady," my mother said, her hand still slightly raised. I felt tears spring to my eyes, but quickly blinked them away. I put my hand to my left cheek, and winced from the pain of her slap. "Now, Mrs. Jones, we won't be having any of that in my office, you hear? She had a right to her question," Doc said, looking still uncomfortable, but with just a hint of anger beneath the surface. He gently pushed her back into her seat. He sat himself back onto his stool, and scooted so that he was between me and my mother. "Now, I know you said that you weren't sexually active," his tone implied that he didn't believe me one bit, "but I'd still like to have some tests done."
I laughed quietly. "What are you saying?"
He sighed, and ran a hand through his slightly graying hair. "Look, Raven, I've been your doctor forever, so believe me when I say this is hard for me to even get out." He paused, took a deep breath, and said, "Raven, I think you're pregnant."
Oh snap. cliffhanger, right? Except it's kind of obvious. It was bound to happen sooner or later! Hope ya liked it.
p.s. I've decided that I'm going to upload one chapter after I have two written. This way, if I get writer's block for one chapter, I can still upload. kay byebye:)
