HERMIONE
"That's totally Barbaric!"
It had been a week since the trouble between Hermione and Draco and happened to be a week that she last took a step into the library.
Her holy corner had been collecting dust from the constant vacancy. No one dared to go into that spot, only making Hermione's return feel warmer than usual.
After lighting dusting the area with her sleeve, she took a seat and opened her little book.
Surprisingly, she hadn't opened the little book of planning for a week as well. As she glazed her eyes over each word, she familiarises herself with each detail. But then again, she noticed the lack of theme.
The was a list of ideas was jotted onto two full pages. But each idea had a quick scribble through the centre, cancelling the idea.
She knew how urgent it was to have an overarching theme of the evening. It guided everything: the mood, outfits, foods and music. She needed a theme however could not put her finger on the perfect one.
"Miss Granger" Draco greeted as he sat next to her, putting his arm behind her back.
Hermione sighed with frustration but still managed a quiet, mumbled greeting.
Draco sensed her mood and leaned in, looking into the pages of her notebook. He noticed the title and page filled with crossed out words, knowing well enough what she was going through.
He was in the same spot not too long ago."Of course," Draco started, smacking his lips together. "Wasn't too long ago I was in this very position. Same seat, same corner, same worried look written on my face."
"But you got a theme in the end."
He tilted his head towards Hermione, his minty breath tickling her nose. "Yes, but do you remember who helped me?"
How could she forget? A simple idea from a magazine. But she was smart and going through those pages was the first thing she did. Late at night, she flipped through every issue since the beginning of her years at Hogwarts, trying to find a spell or a sliver of inspiration. But luck was not playing in her corner.
"That means it's my turn to help you."
The pair were silent was a few moments too long. Ideas were escaping their mind as they crossed each one out. Some seemed glamorous but risky, too many doubts destroying the fantasy. It was happening on repeat, too many being thrown into the garbage.
Hermione groaned into her hands as she leaned forwards, squeezing her eyes so tightly that she began to see spots dancing in her vision.
The pressure was too much. It threatened to pull her down with her reputation, shrinking herself into a speck of hopelessness instead of a speck of success. Her whole life she built herself up to be superb. But in the last few moments of her school-life, she was about to lose it over some silly gala.
Draco knew she was struggling, her mind was so powerful that it began to implode. So, all he could do was rub his hand on her bag and distract her.
"Quidditch game this weekend" he started, grimacing at the pathetic conversation starter. But nonetheless, he saw Hermione's ears perk up, detecting his attempt to give her intelligent being to rest and be like a normal, gossiping student.
Like Draco, she knew normal wasn't real. But she still willingly accepted the conversation.
"Slytherin against Gryffindor?" Hermione questioned and Draco nodded his head in return. "Ron is beginning to worry. Harry is a lot calmer which seems odd."
"He knows I'm playing" Draco started and leaned back into his chair. "And he knows that despite I'm with you, I will still smash his face into the ground."
Hermione gasped at the brutality of his words, but Draco lightly chuckled as he expected her reaction.
"Figure of speech."
"I'll come and watch." Draco lifted his brow and a blush climbed up Hermione's neck. "The game. I'll come to watch the game..."
Draco grinned, his lips pulled tight into small smile. It was enough for Hermione to recognise and smile with him.
"Might sit with Luna again. I like her hat."
"The lion hat?"
"Yes," She replied. She lifted her nose into the air and tried to prevent a cheeky smirk from forming on her lips. "Crown and all."
In that moment was when all the sound in the library vanished and only Hermione and Draco were there. Everything was gone; the sound, the bookshelves, the lights. The key had hit them hard and their minds celebrated with triumph.
"Kings and Queens" Draco started.
"Queens and Kings" Hermione corrected. "Royalty among wizards and witches."
The two were each other's arms as they chuckled and squealed. So much joy and victory polluted the air that their bodies became intoxicated with it. So must strain and struggles went out of the window. None of it was there anymore. They were free of the pressure and lack of creativity. The found a solution.
And Luna Lovegood gave it to them.
