Chapter 1
It's been a week since Retriever ran away from his owner and home. The golden retriever was sat under the broken foundation fence of a house. He was starving and it was the time of autumn resorting to cold weather. The brown golden retriever watched humans walk past him and give him an eye like, why is he alone? Clouds blocked the warm rays of the sun and the cold weather blew onto his matted fur. Retriever whimpered as he felt the cold sink into his pelt.
"You alright mate?" he heard a deep, raspy voice speak to him. He thought he was hearing things because he was lonely. But no, it was an elder male Australian Shepherd.
"Yeah I'm fine, just enjoying the cold weather." Retriever informed him with a shiver in his voice. The elder male sat next to him and shook his head.
The Australian Shepherd coughed violently and cleared his raspy voice. After a while of silence the elderly dog spoke and broke the silence, "You're not from these parts are ya? What's ya name?" he asked.
Retriever sighed. "I'm Retriever and you are right...I'm not from here. I live just in the wheat fields but, I left my owner and I don't want to talk about that right now." the young golden retriever explained to him.
The shepherd listened intently to Retriever. "I understand what you had to go through, you don't have to explain yourself. I'm Dusty. Come on you look starved, I'll teach ya to get food around here Retriever." Dusty said getting up and climbed out under the foundation fence. Retriever nodded following the elder dog. The young dog was nervous following this older dog to get food. He hoped he didn't have to steal, it wasn't much his thing.
Soon, Dusty and Retriever made it to trash can in the back of a house. The elder jumped into the trash can and rummaged through the dumpster. Retriever watched in disgust.
"I'm not eating that! Flies probably already got to it!" he exclaimed as Dusty brought out a raw dirty, piece of stake.
Dusty sighed and threw the stake back into the trash. "Fine. If you don't want to eat that, I'll have to teach you to hunt your meals." he explained and pointed his nose towards a small forest that was hid behind three wide, wooden houses.
