A/N Hello guys, howzit going? This is an AcrossNightTerrors fanfic because there's not nearly enough of those. Also Pirates. Also Mermaids. Here we go, enjoy!

When your ordinary person thinks of treasure, they usually picture massive chests filled to the brim with jewels and tons of gold. Pirates who search for them have black eye patches, hooks for hands and power hungry personalities. This treasure, and this pirate ,though, are fairly different from what your ordinary person thinks. Nightmare stared out onto the vast ocean, reviewing what happened in the past few hours. The crew was mulling around the ship, leaving him to stew alone in his thoughts. They found a map. Not that unusual, given that they are pirates and are expected to follow maps, but this map was different. Unusual, if you will. It was said to lead to The Mother Tree, the one all life sprang from. A legend was tied to this tree, it was also written inside the map:

The Tree of Mother

Giver of life

With secrets darker

Than a Killers knife

If you were to reincarnate it

From its ashes again

To seek treasure or escape

Beware it's bane

Without the fair maidens

Far from the west

Making your way there will seem like a jest

A small price to pay

For your most desired wish

You'll have to follow

The golden finned fish

Sounds easy enough right? Find the tree using the map, look for a fish with a golden fin and bring two girls to the Tree cave. Bada bing bada boom! Your wish is granted! How exciting and straight forward, right? "Captain! The fish is tryin' to leave again!" A rough voice sounded from the front of the boat. Yeah, nothing is ever easy in Nightmares life. "Wait a fucking second, Horror! I'll be right there!" He yelled and began to trudge towards the commotion.
The 'fish' mentioned in the pretty poem wasn't actually a fish, but a mermaid. A merman, to be specific. His brother, Dream. "Oh god Dream, can't you stay still for just a couple hours while we find this goddamn island?" he sighed, exasperated. "Night, this- this has to be a mistake! I never- I never heard of this island before-" Nightmare cut a terrified Dream off "Save your breath, Dreamy. I can tell you're lying." He crouched to Dreams level. "I also know you read those scripts in the castle I never had access to. And coincidentally, you have a golden tail! Come on Sunflower, I thought we were brothers! Just tell me and you'll be free- probably" Dream continued to struggle, though, screaming about betrayal, injustice and what not. Nightmare tuned him out, he was very well used to this monologue from Dream. 'If you hadn't left us alone in the cove, you wouldn't be searching for this treasure to be happy. We could still be together guarding it.' Hah! As if. All of the others would simply spit on him for being an octopod, and the guardian of the other, undesirable side of The Tree. Oh yes, Dreams life was always sunshine and rainbows. After getting cast out of the cove himself for being Nightmares brother, he found himself a following of other idiotic sea monsters and humans. Nightmare honestly wondered where the rest of his 'Star Mermaids' were.

He faintly noticed one of his crew assassins, Killer, try to comfort Dream. Pathetic. The only feelings he felt towards Dream were hate, not protectiveness, or whatever that surge in his soul was. That did not happen. He resorted to ignoring it, like he did with most of his problems. Why was he here, anyways? To contemplate his lifelong agony? He internally scoffed, and made his way to the back of his ship. There, sitting on two empty barrels for  wine, were his other two assassins. "Hey, Dust, Nat!" He greeted the pair, who were playing cards. "Heya Boss!" "Hi Nightmare." Came the replies to his greeting. Natasha, a serial murderer from one of the many islands they coursed through, pushed Dust, a rouge rebel who was found in a port huddling for warmth with Killer, off of his seat when he tried to invite Nightmare to play.
"So what brings you here, Night?" She asked him innocently. Well as innocently as an assassin can be. Nightmare tried to stifle his laughter as he watched Dust grapple around on the floor. "Nothing. I was just tired of listening to Dreams agonizing screams." He sighed and went to lean on the railing, which separated the corners of the ship from the cold depths of the ocean. "Where's Ruth and Ethereal? I thought they would be up here with you." He questioned them for the last two missing members of his crew. "Well, Ruth is down in the kitchen, channeling her inner Goat Monster-" "She is a Goat Monster you dumbass." Nat cut him off, rolling her eyes. "AND thanksforinterruptingmeNAT! Ethereal is down with her, throwing knives into the targets Killer made for him." Dust finished. Nightmare simply nodded, closing his eyes and listening to the sea hum. It relaxed him, that primal calm before the storm.
Suddenly, his nice moment was interrupted by the same rough voice of Horror from before. "Captain! Dream has decided to show us the direction to the island! We await your orders!" Nightmare sighed. This is going to be a long ride. "Killer! Set course to follow Dream!" He called out, as he moved back to the front. He heard everyone scurrying around the deck, trying to get to their posts as fast as possible. With a small smirk, Nightmare stared out to the sea,  wondering what lied beyond the horizon.

Sooooo did you like it??? I'm probably going to try to develop the crew characters as well, idk. Good and bad criticism is appreciated!
