Crawling over to Stephanie Erwen was definitely not I'd expect myself to be doing on a Friday night a couple hours after school, if I'd been told about a month ago. Stephanie was one of the "popular" girls in school, and admittedly one of the hottest. She was kind and loud and open, whereas I was quiet, timid, plain, the girl who buried her nose in her books instead of the gossip.
By now though, we'd been through so much together that it didn't matter who we were. This past month we'd encountered creatures of all manner together, and now we'd finished it. It was the best connection I'd felt with someone in a while. And now it was over.
As I neared her limp figure, I noticed the flickering lights of the gymnasium, and more primarily, the blatant ache in my sides, thigh, forehead.
"Steph. Steph, It's over. We won." All the peculiar creatures we had encountered... we'd triumphed over all of them, somehow.
"Steph. Please." I collapsed beside her, pain ringing in my ears, too weak to stay up right now.She lay still.
