Chapter 10 - Safe Now

4 HOURS LATER

I suddenly felt cold water splash on my face. I slowly blinked my eyes open.

Lukas: "I told you. You nearly got killed out here."

I saw Lukas smiling down at me.

Jesse: "Lukas? Is this a dream?"

I spoke quietly. I didn't have any strength to speak any louder.

Lukas: "No. It's me. I'm here."

I sat up my head felt heavy and my body felt sore.

Jesse: "Where am I?"

Lukas: "In an Oasis in the middle of the Sahara Desert."

Jesse: "Why did you come?"

Lukas: "You know me, Jesse. I'll do anything for my friends."

He smiled. I hugged him.

Jesse: "Ow! What's wrong with me?"

Lukas: "You got badly burned out there. We came across you. You were lying unconscious on the hot sand. We brought you to this Oasis. And now you're safe."

Jesse: "We?"

Petra, Olivia & Axel: "Jesse!"

The others came running to us.

Axel: "You're ok!"

Jesse: "Guys?"

Olivia: "We were so worried."

Jesse: "I told you guys to stay at home."

Petra: "You know we wouldn't let you go on an adventure alone."

I smiled.

Jesse: "Someone remind me why I'm here."

Lukas: "You came here looking for Reuben."

My eyes widened.

Jesse: "Reuben!"

I stood up.

Jesse: "I have to find him!"

I walked one step and I collapsed.

Lukas: "Jesse! Slow down. You need to rest."

I cried.

Jesse: "But..."

Lukas: "Come on."

Lukas helped me relax.

Lukas: "You've been through to much. You need to rest."

Jesse: "Reuben..."

Lukas kissed my cheek. I felt a lot better. It did sting a bit because most of my face was badly burned but I didn't care.

Lukas: "That's not the Jesse I know. Show me a smile."

I did a little smile.

Lukas: "There she is."

I giggled. Lukas and I laid down on the soft, cool sand of the Oasis and gazed up at the stars.
