A state of the art submarine dives below the shimmering blue waters of the Baboy Bay coast line. The viewing ports on the craft look out into a rainbow coral reef as they pass sea turtles, schools of tropical fish, and even an octopus out for a walk along the ocean floor. Gradually the coral beneath the sub thins out until the sand gives away to a dead drop. Inside the small crew of a fox, the captain, and two rabbits turn the lights on to cut through the dimming water and illuminate a honeycomb of caves on the underside of the drop off and the light catching something within the caves sliding away from the lights. The depths of the coastal waters look like a different world from the reef above the drop-off point, barren and still except for the streams of bubbles rising from the bottom.
The second crewmember, a white furred rabbit, looks down at a little monitor, watching the numbers tick up on it steadily.
"Captain, the water temperature is starting to rise we are coming up on the hydrothermal vents," he says.
"Good, prep the probes for launch now," the captain responds with a flick of his thick, red tail.
The first crewmember, a little brown furred bunny with a black spot over his eye, types something into the onboard computer. The sub begins to cruise closely along the ocean floor, releasing a probe from the front of the ship. Inside the crew guide it on a little remote screen as it starts to take samples of the hydrothermal vents, drilling into the sides of them.
"Insert the test wire into the vent," the captain commanded as he turned the controls gently, trying to keep the sub from drifting away from the vents.
The second crewmember turns in his chair to smile at the captain, "If this wire will actually hold up to the volcanic heat this is going to be revolutionary for the energy industry. His pink nose twitches quickly as he speaks, giving away his excitement as plainly as a dog wagging his tail.
The captain looks back over his shoulder with a nod, "One step at a time we still have to see how much maintenance the equipment is going to require to collect and store the vent's energy... but yes the potential is exciting"
"Sir, I am detecting something large approaching us," the first crewmember remarks.
"Another vessel?"
"I don't think so it doesn't sound metallic to me but nothing organic down here should be that large," the first crewmember answers, leaning closer to the monitor.
"How big is it?" the captain asks urgently, coming to his feet and leaning his head over and flattening his ears back to keep them from hitting the low ceiling.
"I can't tell exactly the vents are making it difficult to get an accurate read out on it," the bunny responds.
"Let me see," the captain said.
The brown rabbit picks his screen up like it is a tablet and then hands it back to the captain so he can see. As soon as the screen is in the captain's paws the entire sub shifts violently. Items are thrown across the hull of the sub and the crew falls from their chairs as the lights above them begin to flicker. The hull is still dully lit from the light of the hydrothermal vent outside of the sub but darkness blankets the inside of the sub as a long, scaly side can be seen outside of one of the windows and then disappears.
"What happened?" the white rabbit asked. The crewman clutched his white furred head, rubbing the spot that hit the wall of the sub.
"A fissure must have opened up underneath us get the lights back on now," the captain said looking around at all of the instruments around them.
"There doesn't seem to be any major damage at least," the first crewman commented.
"Good we will still need to include this in the report-." Before the captain could finish his statement the sub is blanketed in a thick shadow. The subs shift hard again, this time getting thrown against the ocean floor hitting the hydrothermal vent, causing it to open up further and releasing more ash and steam concealing the source of the attacks.
"Lights now!" the captain shouts.
The head lights on the front of the sub start to flicker revealing two floating, orange orbs shining through the ash.
