"Cassandra! Hurry up you don't want to be late for tryouts!" My mother shouted from the bottom of the steps as I was grabbing my book bag to put on my back. I still had five minutes until I would normally leave but of course mom was freaking out because it's the first day of school again.
"Ha! I'd love to see them assemble a team without me. Let's be real here I'm the only reason coach hasn't been fired yet," I responded as I ran down the steps and sat down at the dining room table to shove breakfast into my mouth within the next three minutes.
"Honey, you know there's no I in team," my mother stated as she just looked disappointed in me.
"Of course there's not but there might as well be with the team I'm playing with. Hopefully some big strong freshman comes in this year and manages to blow everyone away with his skill. It's not too unlikely, those zombies are known for their strength," I told her swooning a bit at the idea of a guy like that joining the team. It'd be beneficial to everyone and I knew I could manage a date or two if this muscular boy happened to be a looker.
"Then you'd be off the team if that was the case," Mom simply said as I shot out of my chair.
"What are you talking about I'd be off the team?" I questioned as she placed her hand on my shoulder.
"Sweetie, I came to terms with you being the only girl on the team but I'm not going to let you play if there's a zombie on the team. Imagine the danger that would but you in. Zombies already have anger issues and now you're just allowing them to rage for sport. I couldn't live with myself if you got hurt," she answered. I rolled my eyes, taking a piece of toast to-go as I pushed my chair in.
"You do realize I'm more likely to have some senior brute tackle me and I snap my neck or a concussion or my tibia could just break through my skin or a fractured spine. All that's more likely than my own teammate, who's basically just a discolored human, trying to bite me," I snapped a bit and headed out the door before my mom could say anything else. I know I back talked her and I would definitely hear about it later tonight. I'm not giving up football though, no matter what. The team needs me and I need this.
I'm only a sophomore but I knew I'd be able to go somewhere with football. Even if I don't play for a huge college, I could definitely get money from a small school to play on an all girls team. That's the goal anyways and then from there I can get my education for practically free. I wish I could say the guys on the team were like my brothers but they're not. They're all kind of jerks and just spend their time flirting with the cheerleaders.
Ugh... the cheerleaders. Today is going to be something with them. They're the worst of the worst. Sure they seem all peppy and cheerful, I mean they win championships every year, they're good at what they say they do but the cheerleaders are the most vicious people I've met. The amount of protesting they have done to make sure the zombies don't come to Seabrook is ridiculous. They're so judgmental and just overall horrible people. Don't even get me started on the captain, Bucky. He's the worst of them all. He makes sure his horrible opinion is the only opinion of the group and you know he's going to be vocal about it. Cheerleaders are loud, that's for sure. I just wish they'd stick to the positive upbeat part of being a cheerleader rather than the unnecessary pettiness and drama.
Enough about them, I don't want to get worked up before school even starts. Now, I mentioned the zombies. Oh yeah actual zombies, but they're not really your apocalyptic brain eating frenzied freaks, at least not anymore. That's what it used to be and people will not get over the fact that we invented technology to make these zombies and their children completely normal. Sure they may have pale greyish skin and green hair but I think it's kind of cool, interesting actually. I'm not gonna say I'm a zombie activist because that would require caring about someone other than myself, but I'm not gonna treat them poorly. I'll treat them however they decide to treat me. If they're jerks, I'm going to do the same to them. Still hoping they provide something for the football team, it might just save the team.
