Brooke's POV

"Cut one two step step spring down; kick switch step flutter down. Point, fifth turn down and a one two blah blah down," my dance teacher Kathleen called out in a language that only Irish dancers could fully comprehend. "Alright good job everyone. You can take your shoes off and stretch for the last ten minutes. Brooke, I want you to come with me so that I can measure you for your new solo dress."

I sigh in relief and nod. That had been the seventh 'One last time' we had done. I grabbed a quick drink and followed her to the back studio.

"So, Brooke. I want to talk to you about your class placement," she said as she got the measuring tape out. "I talked to Megan and we decided that you're ready to move up and become a Company dancer." Megan was her sister and owned the dance school. She was also very tough on us so I was shocked that she agreed.

I gasped. "Oh my god I would love to. Thank you so much!" I said really fast.

"You're welcome. Just remember that these dancers represent our dance company so there's more practices and more dance competitions. I'm confident that you can handle it, but if I see you struggling, I'll bring you down a level."

I nodded. I have wanted to be a company dancer ever since I saw them dance for the first time. They were amazing. I knew that if I worked hard enough, I could get there one day. I always memorized my steps really fast and the dance studio was more of a home to me than my actual house was because I actually fit in. I'm also really close to my dance teacher. She helps me with everything, but sometimes I can't help but feeling that she's hiding something from me. Like, the other day, I was talking to her about how different I am from my mom. The entire time I was talking to her, she wouldn't make eye contact with me and she looked like she was about to cry.

"Alright, I'm apologizing now because this next measurement is bust to bust. That's basically nipple to nipple so things are about to get really personal," Kathleen said, snapping me out of my trance. I nodded and she continued measuring. "You're done now. I'll see you tomorrow. Come to your regular class though because I want to e-mail your mom first and explain everything."

"Okay thanks Kat," I say using my nickname for her. I don't use it often because I don't want the other dancers to see how close I am to her. I grab my bag and walk out of the studio. I see my mom parked in her usual spot and I walk over.

"Hey honey! How was dance?" my mom asked as she turned her phone off and I got in the car. That goddamn phone. She was always on that thing. My sister, Clara, said she wasn't always like this, but I have a hard time believing that.

"It was really good. Kat wants to move me up to the Company level," I said smiling.

"That's excellent! I'm so proud of you," my mom said as she started driving home.

As we were driving, I looked at myself in the mirror. I saw a blonde hair, blue eyed, 13 year old girl staring back at me. I really don't look like anyone in my family. Everyone has brown hair and brown eyes. I live with my mom, my dad, and my older sister. You'd think I'd show a little resemblance to at least one person, but I don't. My three best friends say that it's probably just the mix of genes, but I feel like it's something more. Oh god my best friends. Kaylee, Sarah, Frida, and I are inseparable and it's been that way since third grade. We do everything together.

I sigh and look out the windows as these thoughts go through my head. I see the familiar houses of my neighborhood in Santa Barbara, California go by and I realize that I'm home already. I grab my bag and quickly go inside to eat. I've been dancing since 6 o'clock and it's now 8 o'clock so my family has already eaten. I make myself a bowl of cereal and turn on the TV in the living room. The evening news is on and before I can change the channel, I hear: "Breaking news just in from Hollywood. Russell Brand and Katy Perry confirmed their divorce earlier tonight. This comes after 14 months of marriage."

I roll my eyes and change the channel. I don't love or hate either of them, but that stuff always happens around here and I get tired of hearing about it. After deciding that there is nothing on TV, I decide to go to bed. Might as well be fully rested for tomorrow.

**A/N

Hi everyone! So this is like a first chapter/prologue kind of thing. It just explains the main character's life. Katy will come into things in the next chapter and things will start to pick up soon. I'm not a good writer so I'm sorry if this is boring or if I've made any typos. Anyways, if you're reading this thank you so much and I hope you enjoy the book!
