As we got into Salimah’s black Volkswagen Jetta, I was thinking of ways to tell at least one of my girls what I desperately needed to inform someone about. “Seanna!” Salimah yelled startling me back into the real world.
“What?!” I yelled back agitated.
Salimah just stared at me for a few tense seconds then finally asked, “So, which mall are we going to?”
“I don’t know,” I responded looking at myself in the mirror. “Maybe we should go to one we haven’t gone to yet.”
“To Westside Pavilion Mall!” Cleyde yelled with excitement from the backseat.
We all cracked up laughing uncontrollably at her as she sat there in silence with a huge grin on her face.
“And you wonder why we call you ‘Mars’! You’re just out of this world!” Elicia managed to say out of breath from the laughter.
Mars just looked at her for a few seconds, smiled, then shouted, “Well, are we just gonna sit here and talk about me or are we gonna go to the mall?!”
As we backed out of the parking lot of the Café, I stared out of the window in a daze after the laughter died down. The entire ride was silent…well other than the simple fact that Mars was singing her heart to Salimah’s mix CD she got for Christmas from Roc. Everyone kept jumping in singing, even myself so that no one who worry about me. I tried to get my mind off of what I was going to tell them by pointing out things like “Wow, I never realized how amazing Mars’ voice is,” and “It’s amazing how many people actually sit out on the street.”
Once again, I was brought back to the real world by Salimah yelling “Se! We’re here!”
“Huh?” I asked slightly confused.
“Are you okay? I mean you’ve been kind of out of it for the past couple of weeks,” Salimah pointed out after Elicia and Mars got out of the car.
I looked at her for one quick second then darted my vision to the ground saying, “So which stores do you think we should hit first?”
“I was thinking about Hollister or Bath and Body Works,” she answered worriedly after a slight pause.
“That sounds good. Let’s go before it gets too pack in there,” I said trying to show her that I was fine.
“So what stores did you have in mind?” she asked as we got out of the car.
“Maybe American Eagle, Abercrombie, and Aeropostale?” I asked her as we walked towards the entrance to meet up with Elicia and Mars.
“Sounds good to me, let’s get to it then!” she said with a smile.
As we walked into the mall chatting, a group of guys around our age started whistling towards us. Mars, as usual, smiled and waved at them. She’s always been a people person. She elbowed me, making me wave at them as well. Once they passed, all of us crowded together and began giggling and laughing like little girls.
The four of us paired off, me with Salimah, Elicia with Mars. It’s how we’ve always grouped together whenever we went shopping.
As Salimah and I went off towards Hollister, she hooked her arm around mine. As soon as we walked into the store, the dimmed lighting and surfer music brought back so many memories, especially how Salimah and I first became best friends in the first place.
When we got towards the back of the store, I figured I should tell Salimah what’s been on my mind right here, right now. It’s a quiet place, in a public place, and there are plenty of witnesses so she can’t kill me because I know she will want to after she hears what I have to tell her….
