Chapter 5
Patience raised her eyebrows as she saw all the junk food on the counter. There were a few big bags of chops, candy, and two ice creams. She looked at Esme, but she smiled and did her puppy eyes. Patience rolled her eyes and paid for the food and gas.
"All of it is not for me," Esme said as they stepped out of the store. "It's for everyone and you know Cody loves candy."
"Sure," Patience replied.
"Wait for us!" Ruth said as she and Cody ran out of the restroom.
Ruth and Cody walked towards in a hurry. Esme waited for them while Patience put gas on the car. Esme let Cody pick from the two ice creams and ate the one that he didn't want.
"The restrooms were nasty!" Ruth said as she opened the back door for Cody. "We were holding our breathes the whole time."
"Esme, do you want to go to the restroom too, while we're here?" Patience asked.
"No, I'm okay." Esme replied as she got into the car.
Patience noticed that Esme was focus on her phone. By the smile on her face, Patience knew she was texting Tanner. She smiled and let her be. Once the tank was full, they continued to drive to Davis. Ruth drove while Patience relaxed on the passenger's seat. If Esme wasn't texting Tanner, she was looking out the window. She thought that all the brown and green that she saw was beautiful.
Ruth spoke to her husband on the phone and then passed it to Cody. He talked to his father a while before hanging up. A while after hanging up, Cody fell asleep. Before they arrived at their hotel, Esme asked about Carlisle.
"You don't want me to skip to the end?" Patience asked. "It'll save you all those useless small details."
"No mom, I want to hear everything about your first love," Esme replied. "What happened? Did you see him for fourth of July?"
Patience sighed. It would have been much easier to skip to the end. "Yes," she finally answered. "After arriving back in New York, I got ready and went to his house. I met some more family members and family friends."
Patience thought it was best not to tell her everything that happened. Some of it was very personal.
"They liked me," Patience said.
"Of course," Esme replied.
Patience smiled. "We spend a lot of time together that summer," she continued. "We always spend some time together, didn't matter if it was just to get some ice cream together or spend the whole day together."
"Ah, yes, I remember," Ruth said. "I didn't see her almost that whole summer."
"Oh, shut up," Patience said with a smile. "We saw each other almost every two days."
"I remember you would take him to the debates meetups we would have. He'll sit there quietly and not understanding any of it. He either had a blank face or was on his phone. It was the funniest thing ever!"
Patience laughed. "Yeah, now that I think about it, poor guy. A few times after I stopped letting him go, I would just meet with him afterwards."
"Oh, but thanks to him, we got to go to more parties that summer," Ruth mentioned. "He was mister popular, so he had a lot of friends. Whenever he got invited, he would invite the group too."
