Alexander woke to a body entrapped with his. His first initial thought was that someone had broken into his tent, but it took a bit of thinking to realize he wasn't in his tent. He heard a soft sigh from next to him, making him turn to his left. Eurielle was sleeping soundly beside him, tucked into his side. Her leg wrapped around his torso, and her arm across his neck.
Alexander's heart swelled in his chest, it had to be the cutest thing he'd ever seen. But then again everything Eurielle did was quite cute. Even with his limbs entangled with hers, he somehow managed to move away to start lacing his shoes up. It wasn't long before Eurielle awoke, and reached out for him.
"You didn't say goodbye," she pouted, cheeks puffed out cutely. Alexander chuckled stroked her hair, "I just didn't want to wake you," he murmured. Eurielle said nothing, shifting to the other side of her bed to pull on her own boots. They sat in silence, as Alexander watched Eurielle lace up the high boots. Then the off key horn sounded, rousing the rest of the soldiers from their sleep.
Alexander stood, turning back to Eurielle to give her a smile. "I'll see you later perhaps?" He asked, she nodded waving him away.
Not long after there was an announcement to assemble, news to share with the troops they were told. Eurielle already knew what it would be. Everyone was in the center of the camp, all standing in formation. Waiting for whatever information, Sneg was going to provide them. The soldiers looked nervous, Eurielle could tell, everyone of them was standing stiffly. It made her nervous as well even though she already knew what was about to be announced.
It was too bright, and too early. Eurielle was indeed tired, even though she slept so soundly. Her nightmares were ever persistent in terrorizing her. But Alexander made everything a little better.
Eurielle let out a loud yawn from where she stood, off to one side with the other scouts. She stood in the center, surrounded by the other six scouts. It was an odd feeling...like being the center of attention but not quite. It wasn't something she liked, but she'd have to get used to it.
Brigadier General Sneg made his way past them, making eye contact with Eurielle on the way. She held his stare, watching as he turned away, braided silver hair swaying in the chilly wind.
He made his way to the Captains who saluted him. Sneg saluted in reply, then turned to the soldiers. "Good morning men..." he said, there were a few murmured replies but nothing too much. Sneg didn't say anything as he usually would have. He continued on, speaking about Eurielle's mission, their findings, everything.
It was hours before they were released back to their tents. Eurielle could've sworn she saw a few stray tears, but could she blame them? With news such as this, it was hard not to cry.
She didn't even get to go back to her tent, as much as she would've liked to catch up on her sleep. Mikey wouldn't let her. Not with all the questions he was throwing to both her and Alexander. "You knew?!" He hissed loudly, making heads turn. "You guys knew and didn't tell us?!" Eurielle gave him a pitiful look, knotting her nimble fingers together. "It wasn't something we would've liked to keep...but Sneg swore us to secrecy until it was announced..." she looked down at her boots to avoid the lost look in his eyes. Alice's death was still hanging over her head, she didn't need the guilt of practically sending all these men to their graves to go with it.
Rafa put a hand on Mikey's shoulder before he could say anything more. Though he looked pretty close to cursing at her, that probably would've been a better alternative. "It's okay," he spoke gently, sensing Eurielle's obvious distress. "He's scared is all," The red head looked up to glare at Rafa, "am not!" He cried, despite the fact his entire body was shaking. Alexander fixed him with a pointed look. "It's okay to be afraid, just don't pretend that you're not."
Mikey didn't say anything more, looking down at his boots and clenching his fists. Eurielle wanted to comfort him, but how could she? When she was the one who caused him to feel this way. "What if I never see my family again?" He suddenly murmured, catching all of them off guard. Tears began to pool at his eyes, "I...I didn't want to be here," he whispered sadly, as the tears began to drip down his cheeks. "Me neither," she said gently, it was followed by a long silence from the four. "We should go," Alexander said placing his hands on her shoulders. Eurielle nodded, giving Mikey, and Rafa one last gentle smile before turning on her heel, and heading towards her tent. Alexander in tow.
"Are you alright?" He asked once they were inside. Eurielle shook her head, sitting on her bed, "no...how could I be alright? We made it in time, but...what if there isn't enough time left? What if we all die?" She swallowed, pulling her knees up to her chest. Alexander sat down in her desk chair, rubbing his face in between his two hands. "With war, anything could happen, we can only do what we can," he murmured. There was a long silence between them, neither made a move to say nothing. Eurielle's mind thinking, and thinking, yet nothing was coming up. She was at a loss, unsure of what to do. She didn't know if she was going to survive, and if she did, would they have even won? How many bodies would she bury, how many names would she cross off? How many belongings would she have to send back to grieving families?
Her thoughts came to a sudden halt when Alexander clapped his hands. "Stop thinking, stop over analyzing everything. What happens, will happen, we can only move forward," he offered her a soft smile. "I will be with you every step of the way."
Eurielle wanted to kiss him again, if it weren't for the soldier who barged in. "Head Scout, Eric Louder!" He shouted, saluting. Eurielle tensed sawing her palm to signal him to stand at ease. It happened from time to time, and she never got used to it. "What is it?" She asked, crossing her legs. "Captain Haiba requests your presence, sir!" He cried. Eurielle could practically hear her eardrums explode from the volume. "I'll be there right away," she replied, waving him off. The soldier saluted once again and marched out.
Alexander gave her a look, "he's my battalion leader," she spoke standing, "I cannot disobey a direct order, you of all people should know."
