Ding! Ding! A small tone sounded from Luke's bag. Peggy and Luke both suddenly got up from the couch, "It's time to leave." I sighed and got up as well. "Ma, Pa, Peggy and Luke are leaving now," I yelled. Footsteps from my parents sounded through the house as they hurried downstairs.

"We'll drive you since you don't have a car," Ma said. "I don't think Star would like that," Peggy responded. "Star?" I prompted. "My dragon," Luke boasted proudly. I gasped, "Can I see?" Dragons?! Are they as big as houses? Are they mean or nice? Do they all breathe fire? I practically jumped out the door after them.

Where?! Where?! Where!? I glanced around. "He's hiding," Peggy provided an answer to my unspoken question. "Star!" Luke called. A roar sounded from above followed by a huge body landing almost gracefully on the floor. So this was the animal which had made the noise at night. I gazed at him with amazement. He was larger than our horses, but smaller than our two-story house. His body was black, almost purple or blueish in appearance, white covered his paws, but was occasionally disturbed by black spots. Eyes the color of green and gold fire, body slim like a snake with muscles bulging with every movement, and folded wings larger than a person. Ivory horns, claws, and teeth glimmered in the sunlight as he stared adoringly at his rider.

"Hello, Star," I whispered, my arms limp at my sides. His eyes flicked to mine. 'Hello, puny human,' he chuckled with a deep rumbling voice. My eyes widened and I nearly fell down. Star's eyes glowed, "You can hear me, can't you?" I looked at him and nodded, "I-I can hear you." Without another sound, he grinned, teeth glinting.

Luke stared at me, "You're so weird it's interesting." Peggy and my ma stared at me, Luke, and Star as if we'd each grown two more heads. Confusion was written all over their faces. Didn't they hear Star too? Weirdos. "Anyways, we'll come back to get you in a few days," Peggy said while walking closer to Star. 'These people don't know how heavy they are,' he grumbled while Peggy and Luke got on his back. Although, he didn't really seem angry. They left to who knows where and we stood there looking as their figures became smaller and smaller.

Night came without any other warning than the clock on the wall. I was in my room, but there was nothing I could do to fall asleep. I sat down near the window, just watching the forest that sat outside. Little glimmers came from it, these little lights appeared regularly. I sighed with contentment as they moved through the trees. Fireflies? Maybe, but I liked to believe they were fairies.

My gaze switched to the sky. What would it feel like to fly? My fingers twitched. I looked away from the sky, and looked at my tree. It seemed to droop slightly, like it was sad. I frowned and opened my window. My fingers twitched again. Suddenly, my entire body convulsed and I fell to the floor. The pain was so great I couldn't speak, hear, or think properly. My bones snapped and stretched. My hair disappeared and changed. I seemed to become smaller until I just stopped, stopped convulsing, stopped changing, stopped everything.

I hadn't noticed my eyes close throughout the chaos. I opened them to see everything differently. I looked down, my feet were like a birds, and my clothes lay beneath them in a crumpled heap. I looked at my arms, there were reddish orange feathers covering them entirely. Now, I was curious and scared all at the same time. I walked to my mirror even more unsteady than normal. The dresser seemed to loom over me. Now this was going to be a challenge.
