Nathan
The water stopped on the last floor. The water covering half of the ladder, where we came from. The only way up to the roof is through the janitor's closet and up the ladder. Considering we didn't have the keys to the closet, I had to break off the handle with a fire extinguisher. I gotta admit, it was kind of the coolest thing I've ever done. Pretty depressing.
But I have a feeling I'm gonna be doing a lot more thrilling tasks more often.
I don't understand what could be happening to our town, or possibly the whole state, but if we don't get help anytime soon, we're gonna be in some huge trouble.
We're all splayed out across the rooftop. Seth with Avery's head laying across his lap, and that weird scrawny kid with glasses sitting beside him and Jason sitting across from them. Iris is standing over by the edge, with her friend by her side, just staring out over the water. Then the dark-haired girl with the compelling blue eyes sitting in the far corner of the rooftop, her eyes showing no emotion at all. And then Violet right next to me, sitting cross legged on the pebbles that make up the whole roof floor.
Everyone's in shock. And surprisingly, out of all of this chaos, I haven't had one panic attack.
Jesse. Owen still hasn't come back with him yet. What if they don't come back at all? No. No he'll make it back. He's Jesse Cimorelli for crying out loud. They're gonna show up any minute.
"Nathan are you okay?" Violet looks over at me.
I haven't even noticed it, but my breathing is heavy, my chest rising and falling fast.
No Nate, don't panic. I put my hand against my chest, hoping it will stop my irregular breathing. It doesn't. I feel Violet's hand on my back and hear a muffled "Breathe Nathan, it's okay."
My vision becomes blurry as my breathing increases.
Jesse's gone.
Everything becomes blurred.
I'm on my own.
The world is tilting.
Mom's probably gone too.
No. Not mom, please not mom.
Owen and Jesse are gone. Mom's gone. So is dad.
I see all kinds of color blurring my vision.
No one's coming for us. We're gonna die up here.
I start to see black, I feel my mind start to fade.
Then I see her face. I feel her hands on the sides of my face. I hear her voice, bringing me back.
Violet.
