It's been almost an hour and nothing has changed with Avery. So Jesse finally decides to do something."I'm gonna go to the gym and see what's going on." Jesse announces to the rest of us. "Coming Nate?"
"Umm..." Nathan glances at Violet who hasn't left Avery's side, then looks back at Jesse. "I think I'll stay here."
Jesse gives a, 'I see what's happening',' look between him and Violet, along with a thumbs up. Nathan shakes his head.
"Okay, I'll be back as soon as I can." He starts to walk to the door.
And I just thought...why not? "I'll come with you." I say as I stand up to join him.
He looks back and smiles at me. I smile back.
Me and Jesse are walking down the red dimmed hallway heading back towards the gym. An awkward silence is the only thing between us, but I'm glad it's dark enough to hide my fidgety fingers.
I need to end this tension now before he starts to hear the loud thumping of my heartbeat.
"So I'm guessing Nathan is your little brother?" I ask to make conversation.
He looks over to me with a hint of a smile, "Yeah, he's in his sophomore year." He replies.
"Oh, I'm surprised I never noticed him until now."
"Well he was home schooled before now, so that's probably why you never noticed him." he says jokingly.
We were coming up to the main office right across from the front entrance. "Oh. That's cool, I wish I was home schooled."
"Really?" He asks shocked. "What's so bad about coming to our glorious Roseville High?" He asks with a wave of his hand like a tour guide. "Is it all the fake people or the teachers who get paid to do absolutely nothing but fail us?"
I laugh. "I'd have to say all the above."
He chuckles but stops almost immediately. I look back at him and he's frozen in place with a terrified expression on his face. He's looking out the glass doors of the front entrance, so I turn to figure out what's wrong.
But I regret it immediately.
