ITALY , 1943

ANASTASIA gave a snort, followed by a bark of laughter. Holding up her hand, she nearly wheezed from laughing too hard. Steve sighed, bowing his head in embarrassment with a pencil and notebook loosely gripped in his hands.

"Steve—honey, come on!" She forced down her laughter, trying to joke with him. "You're the face of America! I'm sorry to say but this is embarrassing for you."

She lifted her cigarette to her red lips, inhaling deeply. Anastasia lowered the cancer stick before blowing the smoke sideways to avoid it going into Steve's face. "You've got moxie, I'll give you that."

Steve shook his head, returning to sketching in his notebook. After delivering a rather embarrassing message to a field of soldiers, Anastasia couldn't help but tease her pal when he ducked off stage to allow the female performers to take over. "How's Buck? You two writing to one another?"

"Yeah," her lips pursed as she flicked the half-smoked cancer stick into the mud. She watched it hiss before dying out. "We've been writing as much as we can, but lately he hasn't been writing back." Her eyes lifted to look out at nothing, watching the rain pour. "The letters just...stopped. I've kept sending out a few..." Her brown eyes met his blue ones, "But I'm gettin' really worried."

Steve put both the pencil and notebook into his left hand before wrapping his right arm around her shoulder. "I'm sure he's fine, Anastasia. You know him better than anyone; he's just a big fathead."

Anastasia chuckled, wiping her nose before dabbing at the corner of her eye when tears pricked them. Steve smiled up at her before starting to distract her by telling stories of all the places he's travelled.

Upon mentioning he's punched Hitler over two hundred times, Anastasia burst out laughing, which made him smile. She listened with her full attention, thinking his travels were way more fun than Peggy, Howards, and hers.

After he was done sharing stories, she watched in contentment as Steve completed his drawing of a monkey on a unicycle, dressed in his Captain America costume.

"Hello, Steve."

They both turn to Peggy, who joins them. Steve's face blanks, not realizing Peggy came with Ana. "Hi."

"Hi."

"What're you doing here?" Steve looked confused, "You with Anastasia?"

"Yes. Technically, we're not here at all." Peggy informed. Steve glanced at Ana, who winked back at him. Peggy cleared her throat, "That was quite a performance."
