Because of You

Chapter 1: The Dream

Johnny's POV

"Yes!" I shouted, on my knees. I just scored a strike. My sister, Erica, and I were still at the bowling alley where we worked. Erica grabbed her jacket and said,"Come on. It's a quarter after. I got a ton of homework and we've got to close up." I walked over and grabbed another bowling ball. "Yeah, I just finished loading the pin setter. Gotta make sure it doesn't crash on me. Erica smiled and said,"Yeah right. You're just playing." I cheered as I got another strike. "Perfect. As usual."

Erica smirked. "And modest, too." I leaned close to her and said,"Hey, did I ever tell you you're my favorite sister." She chuckled. "I'm your only sister. Hurry up." I went to the back and opened my locker. "You coming or what?" Erica said as I noticed a blue and silver ring. I put it on my finger. "Yeah, yeah. You put this in here?" I said, showing her the ring. Erica shook her head. "Nope. It's a girls ring." I tried to get the ring off as Erica started walking away. "Oh, it's stuck."

Erica laughed. "Really? Now you can go steady with yourself." I frowned and said,"Yeah, hardy har har," and closed my locker.

We were at home now, I was still trying to get the ring off while Erica was doing her homework. "You know, I can't get this thing off," I said, walking over to the couch. "Johnny!" Erica said as I accidently almost squashed her. "Sorry," I said, sitting beside her. Erica cleared her throat. "Well, did you try soap?" I held my hand out and replied,"I tried everything except cutting my finger off." I examined the ring on my finger as Mom walked into the living room. "Bed time. School tomorrow."

Erica groaned. "Come on, Mom. I still gotta..." She was cut off by Mom saying,"Erica, please. Don't argue. It's late." She started back up the stairs. "Good night, Mom." She completely ignored me. "Geez. What's the matter with her?" Erica sighed and said,"She's... Got a lot on her mind." She started up the stairs, but turned back around. "You still coming to my graduation tomorrow? Last day of high school." I smiled and said,"Yeah, of course." She smiled back and said,"You coming?"

I shook my head. "Naw. I'm gonna do a little channel surfing. Hit the light, will ya?" She turned the light off, said goodnight, and walked upstairs. After a few minutes, I was struggling to keep my eyes open. Soon, I fell into a deep sleep...

"Johnny! Johnny, where are you? There you are. Johnny, wake up. Johnny..." I sat up and felt my face. It was just a dream. A very real dream. "Oh, man," I said to myself. I tried to take the ring off again. No such luck.

I grabbed the remote and turned the TV off. It was time to go to bed.
