"Iris, it's time to get up." Mother whisperes as she lights the room. I have thirty minutes to get dressed and ready for the day. I put on my usual work clothes, beige capris and a black T-shirt.
"Any breakfast today?" I ask looking at my mother only to see her head shake slowly. This is normal for my mother and I to not eat in the morning; most people in District 11 only eat once a day.
We walk out of our house when the horn goes off. This indicates that the workday is beginning. I start to walk over to the Apple Trees when Rue, my best friend jump on my back.
"Morning!" She screams. I have no idea how she has this much energy at dawn.
"Hey Hyper." I yawn. I met Rue when I was working in the fields about two years age; she shouldn't of been there because she was eigth. I was twelve at the time and since it was Harvest Season, I had to work. Rue and I became close as the years went by because we were always in the trees since we're so tiny and good climbers. ###########################################################
"When are you leaving?" Rue asked as I handed her my bucket of apples from the top of the tree.
"Soon, around noon, so we have the whole day together."
"It must be hard for you, to live without your sister and father. I don't know what I would do if I didn't live without mine." Rue has a sad look on her face trying to put herself in my shoes.
"We have to. That's what the president said. My sister went to live with my father and I went with my mother." Before my mother ot married and had kids, she worked on the trains, transporting different crops throughout the country. When the train stopped in District 5, the train broke down so she had to stay overnight. While she was there, she met an electrician named Carlo and they feel in love. They fell in so much love, that my mother never got back on the train. She stayed in District 5, got married and had two little girls; Samarra and Iris. Samarra looks exactly like my mother; pale, red-haired, and amer eyes. I on the other hand look like my dad who is tan with straight brown hair and dark brown eyes, but I do have some red highlights in my hair.
It was two weeks until my second birthday when a group of Peacekeppers arested us. We were brought to the Capital in chains, awaiting our punishment. After the week long hearing, it was decided that our parents had to live in the district they were born in with one child. And once a year we can see each other again. My parents decided that the day before the reaping would be perfect.
I look out of the tree to see Srnold, the Head Peacekepper waving his gun, singling lunchtime. I send out my four-note sing and wait until the mackingjays pick up the tune. I turn down to see Rue already climbing down the tree and I quickly follow.
"Iris Foxx." A Peacekepper announced.
"Yes," I reply.
"You have to get on a train to district 5 now."
I smile with uncontrollable joy, "Thank you!" I scream and hung Rue. "Have fun and bring me some food," She whispers so the Peacekepper doesn't hear her. I nod and run to my little house. I get my dresses so Samarra can pick which one I wear to the reaping and all of my missing homework so Samarra can help me with.
I get my lunch on the Cargo Train. It's the same lunch that is served in the cafeteria for everyone in District 11, a two-inch roll of bread and an apple. I eat my apple first and save the bread for the birds.
"Do you think Samarra will recognize me?" I ask Mother.
She looks at me with a questioned look, "Of course you will, you're her baby sister."
"But I'm not a baby anymore, I'm 14. I changed a lot since last year."
"But your still the sweet, little, nature loving, innocent Iris." Mom says.
What mom said was true, I couldn't hirt a fly. I even cry after eating chicken because I feel bad for it. I start thinking of the reaping as I fall asleep.
"Iris, wake up, we're here." Mom says lightly as I wake up. Wait, we're here? In District 5? I run to the opened door and look for Samarra. I automatically see a 16 year old red-head that looks like my mother. I have no doubt it's Samarra.
I take off running towards her, "Samarra!" I scream. I get her attention and she starts running towards me, "Iris!" I run into her arms and start to cry. "I missed you so much." I say crying into her arms.
"I missed you too." She pulls me out of her arms so she can see me. Samarra puts her warm hands on my face, "You got so big! You're growing up!" She says.
"You are too." Samarra looks almost like an adult, even though she's only 16, she so mature.
"We got food for you guys, lets go have some brunch." My dad says hugging my mom who is carrying all of my stuff.
Samarra looks at me and then at mom. "Mom, what are you carrying?"
"Iris' dresses and homework."
Samarra gives me a look. "You want me o do all of your homework?"
I smile at her, "Well, your really smart." She huged me and we walk to Dad and Samarra's house.
