Set After: Dark River
Notes: Sandstorm died 1 moon earlier from Greencough instead of living on like in the actual series. The prophecy never existed and nor did the Three, so basically Clan life is just normal.
The sound of screeching rang through your ears, your vision half-blurred from exhaustion and heart thrumming in your chest. There were about twenty rogues, all swarming around the camp.
Ever since they'd attacked half an hour ago you'd valiantly fought alongside your Clanmates but you were weak ever since you'd recovered from the greencough that had attacked you a moon earlier - the same sickness that had killed your cousin, Sandstorm. You were exhausted and wanted nothing more than to sleep but had no choice but to fight on.
You gave a muted gasp as suddenly, a heavy weight struck your back. Crumpling to the ground, you craned your neck to see tabby fur flashing on the edge of your blurred vision. A rogue was attacking you!
You helplessly squirmed but you were trapped like a mouse. The rogue flipped you over, a cruel gleam in his eye. He raised one paw, claws unsheathed and glinting in the sunlight. You stared at him in dread as you anticipated the hopefully painless death.
As he prepared to strike the final blow your life flashed before your eyes. It'd been a good one and you didn't have any regrets but one: Firestar.
An image of the handsome ginger tom formed in your mind and you choked back a wail of despair. You just wished that you'd confessed your love for him while you had the chance... now you never would. You were going to die.
The tabby's paw came down, swooshing through the air. You gave a scream of agony as sharp claws pierced your throat and turned your head, desperately trying to avoid the blow. You shut your eyes, feeling warm crimson liquid bubble at your neck and pain blossoming through your body. You prayed to StarClan that they made it all end quickly.
Suddenly, the weight was gone from you. Eyes snapping open, you saw Firestar locked in combat with the tabby. His green eyes were lit up with eternal fury as he slashed at the tom with powerful blows. Before long the rogue was pinned before his claws and with no mercy Firestar tore his throat open, fangs bared in a cold snarl.
The moment the rogue was dead some cat cried out, "our leader is dead! Retreat!" and before you could blink the rogues were fleeing. Shocked, you tried to scramble to your paws but groaned as agony blazed through you and helplessly slumped back down.
Firestar was bounding over, the merciless rage in his eyes replaced with pure fear. "Y/N?" he said urgently, sniffing you. His perfect scent flooded your nose and you gave a little, frail purr. At least he was here.
You had to tell him while you had time. Just so he knew.
"Somebody, get some moss to stop the bleeding!" Firestar choked out, voice cracking as his gaze flooded with emotion. "Y/N," he whispered, "you can't die. You're all I have left..."
"Firestar," you whispered, your voice raspy. The word was too hard to say but you said it anyway. "I want to tell you something... before I go." You felt as though you were swallowing thorns as you spoke, hot, fiery pain burning through your neck. "I... love you."
Firestar's eyes blazed with an emotion you didn't know and you gave a gasp of surprise as he buried his muzzle in your neck fur. "Y/N," he murmured, "I love you too."
Shock flashed through your body. "But I thought... Sandstorm..." your voice was dying back now, faint through your ragged breathing, and darkness was tugging at the corners of your vision.
"Sandstorm is dead now and I never truly loved her," Firestar responded quietly. "Y/N, I love you. Please... stay alive for the Clan. For me. Don't die." His voice was flooded with pain.
You heard a cat's voice, faint and blurry. "I have the moss." You felt a cool, fluffy material being pressed to your neck and the blood subsided a bit.
"We need cobwebs too." Leafpool's voice rang through your mind, bringing you a little closer to life and helping drag you out of the depths of eternal sleep. "Here."
You felt the cobwebs pressed to your neck and gave a soft sigh of relief as the blood flow eased a little.
"She might live. Someone bring marigold and horsetail and more moss to make her comfortable." Leafpool's voice was blurry but you felt hope at the first three words. She might live. You might survive and stay for Firestar.
HALF A MOON LATER
"Can I see her yet?" a familiar, impatient voice floated over to you and you gave a purr of delight.
"Alright, alright, but don't disturb her. She's sleeping." That was Leafpool. You heard her pawsteps as she left the den.
Firestar's soft, warm scent filled your nose and you opened your eyes to greet him, eyes flooded with love. He nuzzled you. "I thought you were sleeping?"
"Not really. I was just pretending so that Leafpool didn't start annoying me with questions," you purred, touching noses with him.
"I'm so glad that you're here. I mean... alive, and not with StarClan." Firestar's voice was filled with gratitude. "I'm so thankful that they didn't take you."
"I'm glad, too," you murmured, breathing in his wonderful scent. "I'd go crazy without you there."
He lay down beside you, warmth radiating from his pelt. "Y/N, I... can I ask you a question?"
"Of course," you responded, laying your head down on his shoulder and closing your eyes.
"Will you be my mate?"
Your eyes snapped open in surprise. "M-mate?" you stammered. "I-"
"It's fine if not," Firestar blabbered, looking anxious. "I just- I-"
"Forever."
Firestar's gaze melted into one of delight and love and he gave a deep purr that rumbled through his chest. You leaned into him, love bubbling up inside you. You felt different, as though you were complete, whole.
At last, the missing piece had united with you.
