That morning when I woke up, I felt as miserable as ever. It was the day of the funerals. I got dressed and headed downstairs. Marco was sitting at the dining table, sad as ever.
"You hungry Marco?"
"Yeah." I grabbed a few ingredients, a bowl, and a large pan. I mixed the all the ingredients together, cooked it, and got out some plates. I added sliced bananas, strawberries, and maple syrup.
"Here you go." I handed the plate, fork, and knife to Marco. He carefully looked at it.
"Pancakes?" I nodded my head. He slowly cut it and took a bite. His eyes widened. A smile spread around his face.
"Good, right?" He nodded. I grabbed a plate for myself and sat down next to him.
After we finished breakfast, we went to the living, where my mom was sitting down on the couch with a sad expression on her face.
"When's the funeral Mom?"
"Very soon. Go get ready now." She frowned.
As soon as we were ready, we headed out the house. It was raining cats and dogs, so we brought our umbrellas. The drive took about 10 minutes, since the San Town Cemetery was quite far from our house. As soon as we got there, some of my family members and Marco's family were gathering, hugging, and crying. We walked into the gate entrance. A lady walked up to us.
"We're so sorry for your loss."
"Thanks." We walked over to the graves, where the names of the family members were carved into the stone. Marco's mom's and dad's grave were next to each other, with my dad's to the right of theirs.
"Welcome to this funeral of Samantha Calebs, Brandon Calebs, and Benjamin Lambarth. First of all, we'd like to say sorry to the loved ones that they have left that are here and that are not here," a man said. "We will now pray." We closed our eyes and prayed. We opened our eyes.
"Any words for the family members?" He held the microphone out. A few people raised their hands.
"Young man in the blue back there with the blond hair?" Marco walked up and took the microphone. He stood there, not knowing what to say. He slowly opened his mouth.
"From the very first day I met my parents, I cried. I didn't know why. Was I sad? Was I happy? Was I angry? I don't remember." A tear fell down his cheeks and dropped onto the grass. His hair was soaking wet from the rain. "Now, it was the last day that I met them. I wish they could have stayed longer." He paused. "I would also like to say sorry to Madison and her mom. Her dad and I were good friends back then, before any of this ever happened. Madison and I are good friends, and I'm sorry if I've done everything wrong. I'd just like you to know that I care for you so much." He started crying. I couldn't help it. I ran up to him and hugged him. I pulled away. He fell to the ground.
"Marco!" I shouted. I shook him. He mumbled something.
"Dad! Mom!" He smiled and closed his eyes.
"Marco!" The whole crowd was paralyzed with fright. I took out my phone and called 911.
"911? What's your emergency?"
"Hi. We have a boy who passed out, Marco Calebs. We're in the San Town Cemetery. Please come now!"
"Woah. Woah. Slow down. May I talk to his parents?"
"Ummm, his parents are dead."
"Your mom or dad?" I looked at my mom. She was asleep on a bench. I realized that she didn't sleep last night.
"My dad's dead, and my mom is—uhhh—sleeping."
"Okay...We'll be there in a minute! See you!"
"Thanks!" I looked at the fainted Marco. There was a loud rumbling of talking from the crowd.
"Shall the funeral end I guess?" a woman asked.
"I guess. I don't know what will happen." The ambulance arrived. A man stepped out of the truck.
"Where's the boy?" I pointed down.
"Andy! Bring the stretcher!" A short, plumpy man stepped of the truck with the stretcher and placed Marco on it. They disappeared and we were left alone.
I heard footsteps behind me. Slow and steady footsteps. A shadow appeared. Someone tapped me on the shoulder. I whipped around.
"Madison, let's go home."
"Mom, what's happening? Marco passed out, his parents died, Dad died, what if we lose someone else?"
"Madison, stop being so negative. Let's go home now." Just like that, she dragged me to the car.
As soon as we got home, the phone rang. I picked it up.
"Hey Maddy."
"Marco?"
"Sorry, no this is not Marco, but we have him. He is in a state of great depression. We are just treating him a little bit. He'll be back soon."
"Are you sure he's fine?"
"Yes, he's fine for now. Please don't worry him when he gets back. He's very depressed right now."
"Okay. When will he be back?"
"Uhhh, tomorrow I guess? We'll keep him for tonight. We don't want him to, I don't know, get, well, crazy or mad, if you know what I mean." I heard the man sigh.
"Yes, Sir. I understand. Have a good night! Bye."
"Bye!"
The next day when I woke up, I heard my mom calling me.
"Maddy!" she shouted. "Umm, come downstairs."
"Oh, uh, k!" I took a deep yawn and headed downstairs. She was sitting down on the couch, her eyes red and swollen.
"Madison, I have good news, and uh, bad news. What do you want to hear first?"
"The....the....good news please..."
"Okay, Auntie N. just got married."
"The...bad news?"
"Someone died."
