"Mom, what did u you say?!"
"You heard me, Maddy. Someone died."
"Who?"
"Marco." She sniffled.
"What? How? When? Where? And uhh, why?! Why?!"
"He was crossing the street, coming back from the hospital..."
"And?"
"He got hit by a car, well, ran over...by a car. And that car was...."
"And the car was?"
"My car." We were silent for a few minutes. "I was going out last night to buy something, and I didn't see him coming, and...You know what happens next..."
"What?! Mom! How did you not see him?!"
"I don't exactly know, but yeah."
"But yeah?!" I took a pillow from the couch and threw it across the room. It hit a vase of flowers. The vase fell on the floor and shattered into pieces. It was the vase of flowers my dad gave to her before he died.
"Madison Tamoth Lambarth!!" She ran over to the vase and slowly started picking the pieces up. Her tears fell on the pieces of glass, drip by drip, drop by drop. I stood beside her and helped her pick it up.
"Thanks..." she whispered.
"Your welcome." I smiled the smallest smile ever. "Just breathe, Mom. Everything will be alright." I put my arms around her.
"You're right." We closed our eyes, breathed in and breathed out together. When I opened my eyes, I saw Mom smiling. I smiled.
"I love you so much, Maddy."
"I love you so much too."
After lunch, we started to talk about what we should do. My mom planned another funeral for tomorrow at 7 A.M. We decided where we would place the grave, and more things.
The next day during the funeral, the same people from my dad's and Marco's parent's funeral came. They looked as sad as me. They were gossiping about why everyone suddenly started dying for no reason. Meanwhile, the rain poured down.
"Ahmm.." A man coughed. Everyone quiet down to look at him. Let the funeral begin. Marco lay there in the coffin, eyes closed.
People made speeches, but I just didn't feel like doing it. I didn't want to cry anymore, to feel the pain anymore, to shed any more tears. I sat there quietly on the bench, trying my best not to cry. My mom sat beside me, crying her eyes out.
"Anyone else want to speak?" I didn't even bother to raise my hand.
"Okay..." I just stared at Marco's grave, desperately wanting to hug him, to hear his sweet voice just for one more time. His grave was planted next to his mom's, sadly just lying there with no life.
"Now we must pray to God that his spirit will live, and that he will have a great afterlife with God." Everyone kneeled down to pray.
As the man said his words, there was sniffling coming from the crowd. I couldn't help it. A small, but painful, tear slivered its way down from my eyes, to my cheeks, and finally dropped to the ground.
"Amen," the crowd said in unity. The slowly raised their heads, with their eyes swollen. I sniffled.
The placed the coffin in the ground and covered it back with dirt. "RIP MARCO ANTHONY CALEBS. YOU WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED. 2015-2030," it read. I read it over and over and tried to believe that he was not dead or that this never even happened.
Everyone hugged each other, kissed each other, and cried on each other. I just sat on the bench, thinking of all the times we've been together, from when we met in middle school, to meeting again in high school. The time flew so quickly, and in the end, our friendship just ends. How? He dies.
When the funeral ended, everyone just walked to the cars and drove away. Nobody even bothered to pray afterwards but my mom. She kneeled down to Marco's mom's, dad's, my dad's, and Marco's grave. I sat on the bench, staring at her. She got up.
"Okay Maddy, let's go." I stood up and walked, but not to my mom, but to the graves.
"Madison, I said we have to go." I didn't listen to her. I picked two roses from the ground, petals as red as blood and smooth as silk. Slowly, I placed one on top of Dad's grave. I walked over to Marco's grave a did the same thing. A tear dropped.
I looked at Marco's grave and slowly opened my mouth.
"Roses are red, violets are blue, I just wanted to say,
사랑해" (I love you)
