It was the second game of the season and Lexi felt excited. They were playing Tokay, Brayden's school. Lexi was stretching when she saw him and Mia walk to the bleachers where the home team sat. She waved to them then continued to lead in stretches. Jess and Lexi led the team in warmups before the coach called them over. He gave them a small talk before sending them back onto the field. It was Lexi's turn to go meet with the referees, so she jogged over when she heard the whistle. She shook the other girl's hand and claimed tails on the coin flip. Lexi's team would start with the ball first. Lexi told coach while the other girls jogged in and he decided on who would start first. The referees blew their whistles to start the game so Lexi and Jess led the group of starters onto the field.
Jess passed the ball to midfield and let them bring it up while Lexi and Jess made their way toward the goal. In the first two minutes, Lexi had made the first goal.
"Okay girls, don't let it get to your heads," Lexi called out, "stay focused."
The other team got the ball and defense fought hard to win it back. In another ten minutes, Jess had made the second shot. Jess and Lexi high fived but didn't do any more celebrating than that. Jess liked to celebrate after each goal, but Lexi knew it was a long game and that it was still a fair game that could go either way. Both teams made some quick substitutions and the game proceeded, Tokay with the ball. By half time, Lexi's team was winning four to one.
"You girls are playing great out there especially for your second game," their coach stated, "keep up the hard work and listen to each other. Lexi's right though, don't let it get to your heads, but know you're all playing great." Coach again decided who would be starting the second half and benched Lexi. "Hydrate girls."
The other team started much stronger for the second half and got two goals in the third quarter while Lexi's team only got one. Coach put Lexi back in and told her to make sure they didn't catch up and win. Jess and Lexi switched spots and Lexi made another goal after being on the field for five minutes. The other forward, Charlotte, made a goal fifteen minutes later and the game was over. The girls all hugged before lining up to high five the other team. After Lexi high fived the last girl, she turned to see Mia and Brayden coming onto the field. Lexi hugged Mia first then Brayden, who lifted her up and spun her around.
"Mora, get your butt over here," Jess called out with a smirk.
"I will be back, don't leave," Lexi told them.
"Actually, I have to get to work, but I'll see you this weekend," Mia replied, giving Lexi one last hug. Lexi jogged back to her team while Brayden took a spot on the bleachers. Lexi listened to coach's pep talk before grabbing her things and inviting Jess to meet her work friend.
"Seemed like more than work," Jess stated, earning a shove from Lexi. "What, I'm just saying what all of us girls observed."
"Hey Brayden, this is Jess. Jess, this is Brayden my coworker," Lexi introduced as the two shook hands.
"Nice to meet you Jess. You two play well together; I heard some people call it a 'dynamic duo'," Brayden said.
"And that is why we are co-captains," Lexi stated before interrupted by Ethan who hugged her.
"Did you win?" Ethan asked, refusing to let go. Cole came and hugged her from the other side.
"We did win," Jess corrected with a smile, "hey Lucas, Andrew, Nate." Lexi introduced them all, Ethan and Cole only letting go when Nate told them to.
"I was wondering if you wanted to go on a victory dinner, Lexi?" Brayden asked with a hopeful smile.
"And what would've happened if your team won?" Lexi replied with a sly smile.
