Chapter 2 . . .

I was tangled in the cream, linen sheets, hair in my mouth, when I woke up. Wearily, I lifted my face out of the pillow, vaguely aware of Drew’s faint sniggers. I shuffled to the little chest of drawers at the bottom of my bed. Everyone else’s was decorated in varying shades of pink and lilac, topped with vases and doilies, mirrors and make up. I looked down at the bare cover of my won drawers. I hadn’t gotten around to fixing it up yet . . . Oh well. At least it did its job, which was all I needed it for. I selected a loose fitting lilac t-shirt and a khaki coloured skirt. In only a slight rush, I combed my hair, pinning my fringe off my face with two purple clips. Before Drew could manage a snarky comment, I had ran out of the cabin, shutting the door firmly behind me.

I squinted as my eyes adjusted to the sudden sunlight. The only clouds in sight were round and pale in colour – another promising day. Since coming to Camp Half-Blood, everything seemed to be going my way. I didn’t excel in any discipline, but I enjoyed the training. Ancient Greek was mind-blowing stuff, and I wasn’t anywhere near the standard of the other campers, but it was good. What was best about camp though, was the people. I’d made good friends with Nico and Hazel over the past couple of weeks, and it was nice to have someone to hang out with, even though Nico would spend the entire time plugged into his music. Still, at least he was there.

After strolling across the big, omega-shaped cabin pavilion, I reached Cabin 13. I knocked on the door, which, following a series of bumps and bangs from the other side, was swiftly opened by Hazel. Her dark curls sprung madly from every side of her head, golden eyes heavy-lidded.

“Goooooood morning . . .” Hazel yawned, rubbing her eyes with the back of her hand. “Why so early?”

“I woke up.” I supplied, slipping inside when Hazel gestured for me to come inside, accompanied by a loud yawn. Inside, the room was a mess; Hazel’s bed covers were thrown back, the table beside the bed littered with bits and bobs, her untidy belongings reeking of character. Nico’s side of the cabin was all the more dreary. It was meticulously tidy, most things a shade of black. I giggled under my breath at the sight of Nico fast asleep, mouth hanging wide open.

“Doesn’t he ever wake up before noon?” I asked, frowning at his sleeping figure from across the room.

Hazel scoffed. “I wouldn’t either if it wasn’t for you calling so early.” To prove her point, Hazel flopped back onto her bed, splaying out her limbs, eyes drooping shut again. I shook my head, laughing breathily.

“Well,” I stated, “I’m going to get him up. He’ll miss breakfast and he’ll end up twice as emo as normal.”

“I can’t disagree there.” Hazel yawned, eyes closed, feigning sleep.

With an air of mock dictatorship about me, I stomped over to Nico’s disheveled figure, probably not looking too commanding at all. I shook his arm, whispering softly, telling him to wake up, and completely giving up on the whole military drill thing. He nuzzled into the pillow, turning around so that his back was to me. Lovely, I thought to myself, he’s shirtless. And has a dinosaur spine. The discs of his spine stuck out through his skin, each one clearly marked. I shuddered. Regardless, I crouched down a little, whisper-shouting in his ear. I heard Hazel moving about behind me, hopefully getting ready at last.

Then, out of the blue, I was thrust forward, pushed down by a hand. Hazel’s hand. I squirmed, uncomfortable with the knowledge that Nico was now completely awake, completely naked and all whilst I was on top of him. His dark eyes were wide open, sparkling at some unspoken joke and mouth hanging open like a goldfish’s. He looked like he was about to say something, but thought better of it. I only became aware that Hazel wasn’t pushing me down anymore just then. She was snickering to herself off to the left, utterly pleased with herself for getting Nico and I in such a compromised position. Nico swallowed quite audibly, his face flushing red, the first time I’d actually seen colour in his cheeks. I was sitting up a bit, eyes not straying from Nico’s face and the dark wall behind it, but even so, I couldn’t resist following the gaze of his suddenly dilated pupils.

When I saw what was there, I scrambled off him, stumbling slightly. Without looking back, I hurried swiftly out the door, heart racing. I hadn’t needed to see that. Hadn’t needed to see that at all. The thin fleece he’d been covered with had actually shielded it from view, but it didn’t stop the shape of it coming through. In fact, it highlighted the shape of it. A shiver ran up my spine.

I glanced behind me, just in time to see Hazel stumbling out of Cabin 13, pulling a beige hoodie over her head. She skidded to a halt just as her head popped out of the neck hole.

"Oh my gods Sadie . . ." she panted, grimacing. I didn't expect that to happen . . . AT ALL. I'm so so sorry, I mean, what the Hades!?!" She laughed nervously.

I tried a smile. "It's fine, really. I'll just forget anything happened . . ." Over Hazel's shoulder, I saw Nico shuffling out of the Cabin, huddled up in his jacket. I couldn't see his face from where I was, but I was sure he was as mosrtified as I was. I hadn't been listening, but Hazel has mentioned she was going to the Dining Pavilion for breakfast. I waved her off awkwardly. Nico looked around and glanced at me. I darted behind a tree, face flushed.

What a great morning that'd been . . .
