MJ and I stayed close to each other for the rest of the day. We went out to explore the yard with Ned, Betty, and Flash, it was pretty. There is a lot of trees, even a small pond. It reminds me of the cabin. When I see a small flower bud falling from the tree and floating calmly on the water I can't help but let out a small sob.
MJ squeezes my arm and everyone else doesn't seem to notice the small sob. That's good, I don't really need everyone to see me on the verge of sobbing. When lunchtime rolls around, May calls us in. She made us mac and cheese.
Surprisingly, it is very good. Probably because all she had to do was put the pan in the, regardless it was the best food I've had in a long time. We all sit around the table laughing and telling stories.
May's phone buzzes and she excuses herself from the table with a small blush, it's probably Happy.
"We should check out the bowling alley Happy was telling us about," Flash said after polishing off his mac and cheese. Ned and Betty agree excitedly, MJ looks over to me and I can see exhaustion swarming in her eyes.
"I was actually going to start reading this book... It's about how Bruce Banner was able to combine the brains and the bronze," Surprisingly my lie is very convincing.
"Sorry, I promised my cousin I would face time her," MJ said with a small shrug.
Betty looked confused, "Happy and May said that we can't contact anyone besides each other and our parents."
A slight flash of nerves flashes across her eyes, but it was barely noticeable, "Happy said I could." The three of them shrug and don't further question her.
After everyone finishes, Flash, Ned, and Betty we walk to the stairs saying our goodbyes as MJ and I walk upstairs and Ned, Flash, and Betty walking downstairs.
"My room?" I question breaking the silence. She stops and smirks at me,
"I have to call my cousin... besides I thought you were going to read," Her voice is sharp. I blink at her and she turns to go into her room but I quickly grab her should causing her to turn around and look at me.
Instead of saying everything I give her my best puppy dog eyes and stick my bottom lip out. "I was joking, loser," she shakes her head and follows me into my room.
She jumps onto my bed sighing as her head falls back onto the pillows, slowly I crawl across the bed and lay down next to her. I hear her let out a chuckle. Not being able to stand the distance I roll over so my head is on her shoulder. She rolls her eyes at me but puts her arm around my shoulders anyways.
"This is nice..." I mumble. MJ scoffs.
"No fair!" MJ whines, "I like being the one being cuddled..."
My heart warms but I nuzzle my head against her shoulder, "Me too."
She runs her hand through my hair making me instantly calmer. "You're like a baby!" She says while laughing.
I don't respond. Instead, I tell FRIDAY to turn on the TV and play 'The Middle' our favorite TV show.
...
I wake up to a scream and my head being thrown off of MJ's body. I quickly scramble up in bed and pull the trembling girl into my chest, running a hand through her hair. "It's going to be ok, your safe MJ, It's ok," She sniffles and her body still trembles.
"I'm sorry," She whispers.
"You have nothing to be sorry for," I respond. I continue rubbing her back and hushing her until she calms down.
