It was a normal day for thirteen-year-old Kasey Crain and her parents as they walked into a busy airport that was nearby a temporary military camp. Her mother had insisted that even though it was a nice fall day without a breeze or cloud in the sky, they should all go on vacation to California to see the sights.
“Do we have to go?” Kasey whined for the tenth time that day. “I won’t be able to talk with my friends.”
Her dad didn’t look up from his phone but at least this time he answered. “You can always use you’re YouCam on the laptop and I’m sure you have their numbers on your cell phone.”
“It’s not the same.”
“At least you’ll be missing school. All kids love that.” Her mother replied.
“I don’t want to do all this make up work when I go back.” Kasey glared at her parents, why couldn’t they ever see how out of reality they were. Sure they were rich but that didn’t excuse them from a normal life. “I have idiots for parents.”
“Honey, don’t talk to us that way.” Her father half-scolded. “Now why don’t you find something to buy so you won’t get bored on the plane?”
Kasey gave in and took some money from her mom before leaving, she wouldn’t get board on the plane because she had everything from books to an Ipad in her carry on bag. Making up her mind she decided to do what she did best, wander around a bit and eavesdrop on where other people were going. However first she bought a bag of chips from a vending machine and sat down in an empty seat so she could keep an eye on the clock, her parents, and everyone else who passed by. Five minutes later a group of military officials came walking in, the one in the lead was talking about a shield or something from what Kasey could catch from their whispered conversation, trailing a few feet behind them was another official man who was in a black suit and seemed to be trailing the others and talking to someone else in their ear piece. Kasey watched them with interest along with the other people waiting for the flight to start boarding, but unlike them after they walked out of sight she still wanted to know what they were talking about.
“How long until we can board?” Kasey asked as she ran up to her parents.
“Didn’t we tell you to go buy something to do?” Her mother sighed and fixed her hair.
Her dad however was more helpful. “About ten minutes.”
“Thanks.” Kasey rushed off to follow the military officials but found they were out of sight… there went her entertainment.
She turned around and started to follow the signs back towards where her parents would be, that’s when gunfire started going off. Kasey whipped around as she tried to determine which way it was coming from before dashing forwards towards her parents again. They were panicking along with everyone else and Kasey quickly made her way towards them, they might not pay attention to her half the time but she was still their daughter, perhaps once they saw she was safe they would calm down a bit. Gunshots got closer along with people shouting commands, Kasey’s parents looked towards her and smiled in relief, she was about three feet away before bullets shredded them and grazed her arm before somebody pulled her back.
“Get down!” A man’s voice ordered her.
“Mom… Dad?” Kasey trembled as she stared at her parents’ lifeless bodies.
“Can I get back up here? Hello? Where’s the electrical team? The power should be down and my team is gone.” The man barked into an earpiece.
“They’re gone Lance.” A female’s voice replied. “You’re on your own until we get there.”
“Hurry, I managed to get most of the survivors out but HYDRA has surrounded the room and there’s a little girl with me who’s injured.”
“I’ll try.” With that the conversation ended.
Kasey felt the man, Lance, put a hand on her shoulder to keep her ducked down but she didn’t feel like moving anytime soon. She couldn’t get her parents last moments out of her head.
