Jade sat in the cafeteria with her sketchbook from her art class, doodling anything and everything except for the homework assignment her art teacher had given her. Matt sat next to her, tapping two of his pencils against the table in time to some song in his head whilst they waited for Alex and Sasha to come back with their lunches.

"What 'bout yehr parents, Jade?" Matt suddenly asked. Jade dropped her pencil and turned to him with dismay. This wasn't the first time he or the others had asked about her folks, and it certainly wasn't to be the last if she continued to keep quiet.

"What about 'em?" she asked.

Matt shrugged, "I don' know. Yeh never talk about 'em. Where are they?"

"In Newcastle,"

"No shit," he spoke somewhat harshly, "Seriously though, 'ow come yeh never talk about 'em?"

"Talk about what?" Sasha's voice suddenly bellowed from behind them. She and Alex sat down on the opposing bench of the lunch table with their own trays, consisting of a grey piece of meatloaf, white rice, and a limp-looking pile of vegetables.

"Nothing," Jade said.

"Talking 'bout 'er mum and dad," Matt said.

"Yeh tryna' piss 'er off again, Matt?" Sasha asked him with an audible sigh.

"Yes," Jade replied while Matt only shook his head in his defence.

"I'm just curious, is all," he said, "For all we know, she were raised by Fred and Rose,"

"Oh, fuck off," Jade said. Alex just shrugged as he picked dully at his rice.

"If she don' wanna talk about it, then she don' wanna talk about it," he said, "Just leave 'er alone,"

"Thank you," Jade grinned at him, "And for the record, if my parents were serial killers, don't you think I'd have taken care of you by now?" she told Matt.

"Nah," he shook his head casually, "Yeh're too short to do any real damage,"

"Get fucked," Jade replied.

Sasha snorted, "Ain't like 'e 'asn't been tryin'" she said.

Matt just flipped her off and dug into his own lunch. Alex bit the inside of his cheek to hold back his own smirk, instead letting his eyes wander to the page that Jade was sketching over. It was a cute little rendition of a monkey, with little round ears, big eyes, and a curly tail.

"Yeh're drawing a monkeh, Jade?" he asked.

Jade shook her head, "Nah, I'm drawing you, Alex," she replied with a grin.

Alex chuckled back, "A perfect likeness," he said.

"I thought you'd agree," she said, "Been thinking about drawing Matt, too. Elephant trunk and all,"

"Oi! Why am I an elephant?" Matt asked jokingly, "Make Sasha an elephant,"

"Fuck off," Sasha whined, "I'm the furthest from a fookin' elephant,"

"Yeh're right," Matt said, "Yeh're more of a ostrich, if anyfing,"

It was Sasha's turn to flip Matt off whilst Alex just shook his head, "Pipe down, guys," he said, "Besides, the rhino behind yeh is watchin'," he nodded behind them. They all instinctually turned around, finding the Brute Luke sitting two tables down, picking dully at his mash and beans as he stared down the kids. Jade felt a shiver run down her spine.

"He's vile," she said, "I'll never understand what joy someone can derive from putting someone else down," with that last word, she turned to look down at her book again.
