Then:

"Go Hayley, I got Hope."

"G-go."

***

"No."

"She planned this all along. She never intended to allow Klaus to go through with this. It's the reason why she brought me back. To help Klaus mourn her."

"You knew? And didn't tell us?"

"Not really, no. She compelled me to forget after she told me. For some reason, I-I just remembered."

"Compulsion wears off once the person who does the compelling... is dead."

***

"Look..."

"Hayley, look!"

***

"Dean, look-"

"Don't. Don't say anything. It's okay. We just got to keep our heads down and hash this out, alright?"

***

"Well, whatever. It's the least of our worries. We need to find Athena and Cas."

Now:

Chapter 2

Kol had turned around and headed back to New Orleans when he got a call from Rebekah telling him that Athena sacrificed herself instead but somehow survived.

Now, they all sat in the study room wrapped up in their own thoughts while Klaus, Hope and Hayley was with an unconscious Athena in her room.

"We should have seen this coming." Marcel said solemnly.

"For once I agree with him. She has been acting more strangely than usual these past few months." Kol said as he drowned his bourbon.

"I can't imagine what Nik would have done if she remained dead." Rebekah said as she rubbed her bloodshot eyes as she leaned on Marcel for support.

"We all know what would have happened. He would have turned the world upside down in his attempt to bring her back." Elijah didn't even want to think about it. Even the mere thought of what his brother might have done, frightened him.

"I spoke to her pack and even though they didn't reveal anything, I could tell that they knew of her plans. They didn't seem surprised when I informed them of what she did. And yet, they didn't even tell us before hand. Fuck! Athena told them and not us, her family!" Killian said sadly while running a hand through his auburn locks in frustration.

"It doesn't matter anymore. She's alive now." Camille said softly to lessen their worry and guilt.

"It doesn't matter? We almost lost her!" Freya stood up in rage as she stared Cami down. Killian wrapped his arm around his pregnant wife's shoulder in an attempt to calm her down but it had the opposite effect.

She shrugged his arm off furiously, "You may not have known her long but you do not understand. We are her family. Her family. And we were so blindsided by protecting Hope that we completely oversaw her plans. We should have known better!" Even though she yelled at Camille, it felt more like the words were spoken to herself and her siblings.

"We should have known that she wouldn't just allow Niklaus to kill himself. We should have known," the tears flowed freely as her anger turned to bitter guilt.
