Chapter 4~ Fire and Ice

Jack's POV

     I was sleeping contently against the cold snow, the moon casting a glow over Elsa as she slept a foot away. A scream pierced through the night and my sleep, I woke with a jolt and Elsa was sobbing. I looked at her, curled up in a ball, against the snow. I touched her shoulder and she didn't respond so I pulled her close to my chest, which made her sobs slow to hiccups. I whispered reassuring things to her and soon she had eased back into a comfortable sleep, I didn't close my eyes again, instead I stayed awake, watching over her.

I glanced back at Elsa, as the memory of the night ended, she looked so peaceful when she slept. I smiled slightly to myself as she mumbled something in her sleep. my eyes looked up to the sun as it's first rays stretched across the forest and outlined the trees surrounding the lake. I looked back down to Elsa as she stirred, the glow of the sun radiating off of her. "Morning" I whispered to her ear and she whispered something back and then her eyes flew open.

"Jack?!" She exclaimed quickly, sitting up and I looked at her weirdly. "Oh right, we fell asleep, but, I was right there, how did I get.... Oh." Her facial expressions went from nervous, confused to understanding and a little scared.

"It's alright Elsa, you just had a nightmare and didn't wake up and you were sobbing and... yeah" I said and trailed off at the end and she just closed her eyes, sitting up. "Elsa, what happened?" I asked her quietly.

"I wasn't the oldest always in my family, I had an older sister, her name was Inger. She was born with my father's colored hair and the light blue eyes, she was eight years older than me. We grew up very close and she encouraged me to use my powers often, she loved it. One day though, there was an accident, before Anna had her 2nd birthday. We were playing on the pond, but she fell through the ice and became unconscious for five days. When she woke up, she said that she had to go to the forest and everyone was trying to hold her back, but she somehow managed to go.

The next day she came back and had been gifted with fire powers, which astonished us all, being only 5, I was amazed by it. She told me how and why she had the powers, on Anna's 3rd birthday she was invited to the kingdom of Denmark. Accepting the invitation she left the day after Anna's birthday. But she never returned home, she died in a shipwreck on the way, just like my parents. That's what happened, and almost every night I have nightmares of losing both my parents and sister." She finished her story with a sigh and I slowly put an arm around her shoulder.

"You'll be safe in my arms" I whispered to her ear and she smiled slightly and turned her head, our faces a few inches apart. I felt my breath catch in my throat as I looked into her teary blue eyes. 

"Do you know how it feels?" She asked and I slowly nodded my head. 

"Yes, I do." I answered and she turned her body towards me and hugged her knees, I smiled a little at the sight and sighed.

"Originally I didn't have powers, I was mortal, like you, my name was Jackson Overland, not Jack Frost. I had a little sister named Emma and wonderful parents. One day we went out to this pond in the woods, to play and well, the ice wasn't stable enough in the center. Emma ended up in the middle and I saved her, by calming her down and playing hopscotch, I used this stick, which is my staff now to switch places with her. I died saving her and Manny, the Man in the Moon, told me that I was Jack Frost and that's where I found out I had the ice powers.

Well, some things happened and I became a Guardian and we fought Pitch and so on. The guardians each have a center, mine is fun and there are four other Guardians. Santa Claus, or more commonly called North, his center is Wonder. The Tooth Fairy, her name is Toothiana, but we call her Tooth for short, her center is Memories. The Sandman, or Sandy, his center is Dreams. Then there's the Easter Bunny, Bunnymund long for Bunny, his center is Hope. We all are the Guardians of those centers and bring those things to children. So there, that's my life story." I finished and turned to look at her, she had an unreadable expression and I chuckled lightly.

"Wow, that's quite an adventure, but um, who's Pitch?" She asked and I looked down and shrugged my shoulders.

"He's our rival, the villain, the Boogeyman, Pitch Black, he spreads fear through nightmares." I looked back up and she was processing all the information, I chuckled at her concentrated look and she glanced up.

"What?" She questioned and I laughed a little more, she smiled but had a confused look on her face and I couldn't help the laughter that escaped. I didn't notice that she had snuck behind me and when I opened my eyes snow covered me as she immediately walked backward. I stood up and chuckled, forming a snowball and flashing her a smirk as I aimed it at her, she blocked it with an ice shield and then she was laughing. I grinned and now we were in a playful battle with snow, so far she was winning and I chuckled to myself as I snuck behind her, the wind and snow I had distracting her. 

I smiled and blew on her neck from behind her and she gasped, turning around quickly. Our faces were closer than I had expected and she had a slight red stain on her cheeks, her eyes shining brightly. "Jack! I th-thought you were over there." She gulped and I grinned at her, slowly I brushed a strand of her hair away from her face, causing her face to redden even more. Breathing quickly she bit her bottom lip nervously. The wind around us was now a calm and still atmosphere as I smiled at her embarrassment. A yell pierced the air and caused both of us to jump apart.

"Elsaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!" Anna called, walking around from behind the trees, in search of her sister.

"I'm here" she replied and Anna quickly joined us, talking very fast, saying something about Krisotff and the wedding and invitations and getting ready and how they were looking all over for her and then she stopped. I hadn't taken my eyes off of Elsa who was now concentrated on her sister. But Elsa was still a little distracted and Anna waved her hand in front of Elsa's face.

"Hello, I was talking, since Jack, you're here, I need you to go and help Kristoff with the ice sculpting and Elsa, I need your help on some of the decorations. Now let's go, go, go!" She yelled and grabbed both of our hands, leading us towards our destinations. When we reached the castle Anna pushed me towards the barn and grabbed Elsa's hand, dragging her inside. She mouthed a 'sorry', apologizing for her sister's abruptness and I grinned 'I'll see you later' I mouthed back as she was already around the corner.

Elsa's POV

Anna was lecturing me about a lot of things and I was slightly listening but my thoughts were distracted by Jack. I have never been one to so casually hang out with someone, much less a guy, but something about Jack was different. He was kind and considerate, but also casual and fun, I mean he is the Guardian of Fun. Anna had stopped and tried to get my attention, but I continued in my thoughts. It was an adjustment, stepping out in public so often, but truthfully I wouldn't mind if Jack was there. He seemed to help lighten the atmosphere and break any tension. Anna finally grabbed my face and looked me square in the eye. 

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I was just thinking..." I apologized and she raised an eyebrow. 

"Mhm, well, now that you're all done thinking, we can get started on the work!" She smiled and I nodded, following her. As we walked, I looked down at my purity ring that was my Mother's, she had left of us each one for our 16th birthday along with a journal to write in. Anna's was a emerald color with silver and engraved leaves on it. Mine was an aquamarine stone with snowflakes engraved in it. I looked up again at Anna's question and answered it, after a long day of planning and getting decorations up I went upstairs and retired to bed. My head hit the pillow and I quickly drifted into sleep, but before I was asleep, I felt a soft breeze around my cheeks and the peaceful hum of a deep voice.
