A/N The challenge was for me to write a story that was exactly 200 words. I think I did an okay job but you can be the judge of that.

People often wonder where the tales of elves and fairies originated. Why are we only awake during the day?

The answers lie in a story forged by envy and grief, yet forgotten by many.

Long ago, before the humans dominated the Earth, there were elves. With shining hair, pale (almost blue) skin and pointed ears. Then there were the fairies, small creatures that lit up the space around them.

When the Sun went down to sleep, these creatures would come out to play. They never feared the darkness that came with the Sun's departure, for they had the Moon. It sent bright, silver rays to the land every night.

Unfortunately, these days didn't last. As there were nocturnal elves, there were diurnal goblins. These goblins were jealous of their nightly counterpart.

So, when dawn arrived and the elves slunk away, the goblins took their precious fairies and threw them to the sky. They covered the moon with a thick sheet so every night, the land would be shrouded in perpetual darkness.

But all wasn't lost. The fairies could still be seen as tiny dots of light and, occasionally, the blanket over the Moon would slip, letting a little light peek through.
