Prompt: Write a 200 word short story that uses a lot of uncommon similes.
The door shut softly behind me, locking itself with a barely audible click, like the last, dying note of a flute. With a sigh as shaky as my limbs, I slid down the rough wood. My heart felt constricted, as though it were wrapped in chains. Lips trembling, throat clogged with held back cries, like a mouse trap waiting to go off.
For a moment, I didn't think, I didn't breathe. I just stared into the dark entryway, hoping to see a silhouette approaching me with outstretched hands, to see anything but shadows which were as black as the funeral garbs, until I couldn't hold my breath any longer. Wheezing, until I choked, until the air I took in built up like bricks, creating a wall between me and storming emotions.
The sound of scuffling, ripped through my stupor. Reluctantly, I got up from my place by the door. Stumbling towards the noise, like an infant whose head was too big for its body.
Flicking the light switch on, I could only groan at the mess before me. My dog sat among shredded papers. The sheets were as white as my sister's face...cold and still. My eyes shed tears like the rivers they resembled.
A/N I'm not happy with the ending, but I couldn't stretch it out longer 'cause of the dam word limit. Word counts can be helpful when removing unnecessary writing or repetition, but it can also be really restricting.
