I'm back!
***
I hear the jiggle of keys at the door and it immediately paints a smile on my face. I walk to the door to greet her like I always do, but I freeze in place when I see who just opened my house's front door.
"Well? Aren't you happy to see me?" He dares to ask with a disgusting smirk.
"Aaron." I mutter with hate. He left, why is he here? In my house?
"What? You really thought you were going to get rid of me?" He laughs. "Oh, sweet Nadia. You will never learn, will you?"
"How did you get in my house?" And more importantly, were is Diana?
"Oh, you didn't hear?" He asks sarcastically. "I opened the door with a little thing called key." He say with sarcasm waving Diana's keys in front of my face.
"Where did you get does from?" I demand, trying not to let him see the panic inside me.
"That brunette, what's her name? Daniela? Anyways she was dumb enough to let me get near her." He steps towards me and I immediately retreat. My fear makes him smile, just like it used to.
"What did you do to her?" I ask all while trying to keep a straight face.
"Relax baby, I didn't hurt her." That, somehow, makes me relax a bit, but the fact that I still don't know where she is makes my skin crawl regardless. He steps towards me again. I try to act strong this time. I'm not going to give him the satisfaction of seeing my fear again, that forms part of the past. "You know? I don't really like the idea of my wife dating someone, let alone a girl." He mutters stepping closer, to the point where I can smell the alcohol in his breath.
"I'm not your wife, I never was. And I'm not dating Diana." I tell him standing my ground.
"You belong to me." He growls, making me cower away despite my attempt to appear strong. "And how pathetic of you to think I haven't seen you kiss your stupid lover." He laughs.
"We're not dating. I proposed to her two weeks ago." At that he snaps, reaching to grab my neck. I try to run away but I hit a wall.
A noise calls his attention and he turns to see my son looking at us terrified with a shattered glass in the floor. "Hello, Joshua." His biological father says stepping towards him. The eight year old squeaks in fear before running back to the playing room with his siblings. Aaron laughs. "I can't believe that's my son, he's a complete coward. That's what happens when you allow a kid to be raised by bitches."
"Get out of my house." I state at him. He looks back at me in fury and aims a punch at me, I manage to duck it and run for the kitchen, but he catches me first.
"I'm going to show you manners." He says picking me up. I try to kick at him but it's useless, as he wraps his hand around my neck. "I'm going to remind you what she will never be able to give you." He says sitting me on the table. I start to lose my strength due to the lack of air in my lungs, but before I can pass out something shatters against his head and he releases me instantly.
I see Angelica, Diana's nine year old, and understand she must have thrown a base at him. He turns to her, giving me time to grab a knife and stab it in Aaron's back. He screams in pain and I flea the kitchen with her and run to the kids playing room, locking the door behind me.
I sigh in relieve when I see that all four of my kids are in the room. "Mommy!" My five year old cries. I pick her up.
"Shh, I'm right here." I tell her.
"Where is mamma?" Paul asks coming to hug me.
"I don't know." I admit. "I'm sure she's fine." I assure them and myself. I hear banging against the door and take them all to the joined bathroom and lock ourselves in there. "Call the police." I tell them.
"I already did." Josh says handing me my phone. I thank him.
"Hello?" I say into the device.
"Where are you right now?" A female concerned voice asks.
"In a bathroom, Ella's street, house thirty. It has a small pool and a slide in the garden." I say in a rush.
"Ok, police will be there as soon as possible, do not hang up. Could you describe the aggressor?"
"Aaron Smith, white skin, black hair, tall and broad built."
"Do you know him ma'am?"
"Yes, he's my ex-partner. He was abusive towards me and my children." I explain.
"Who is in the house with you? Besides the two kids I talked to and Aaron."
"Five. My kids, and myself. The two kids are Joshua and Angela, eight and nine. Then Paul, seven, and Sophy, five." I tell her, trying to control the panic as the banging on the door increases.
"What was that?" She asks worried when the door of the kids' room finally gives in.
"He must have broken the door of the room." I conclude.
"Is there any window you could escape through?" She suggest. I look around.
"Yes, it's a bit high and small, but I think the kids could escape from there."
"What about yourself?" I can tell she's panicking as well.
"I don't think I could, but it's fine, as long as the kids are safe it's fine." I assure her, already on top of the toilet trying to open the window. Once I manage I get down and face my kids. "Ok, you're going to get out from here, as soon as all of you are out I want you to run as fast as you can to the neighbors, Ok?" I tell them, my heart rate only increasing as the banging start on the bathroom door. They all nod, Paul and Sophy crying while the two older try to act strong.
I give the phone to Josh and help Angy on the toilet and down the window, she falls on the grass but gets up quickly. I pick up Paul and lower him to his sister, she takes him and lowers him on the ground, waiting for me to give her one of the other two. I do the same with Sophy, almost dropping her when the hits against the door get louder. Finally Josh is out just as the door starts to crack. "Run!" I tell them and they obey.
"They're out." I say to the operator on the other side of the line. "And the door is breaking!" I
scream.
"Do you have any-" The phone is snatched from my hand before she can finish the sentence.
