Ivan woke up thinking that maybe this year would be the year. Maybe today would be that day. The day she'd notice him. The day she would come up to him and tell him she missed him and wanted him just as much as he wanted her. He knew the chances of that happening were impossible. It's not something she would do. In all honesty, he thought she had let go of those precious memories. She'd buried them in some crevice of her memory, never to be touched again.
His house was typically busy in the morning. Around six am, his father would get up and start getting ready. That would wake up his mother, who would then wake up the housemaid to start making breakfast.
Ivan's mom softly knocked on his door and in her gentle voice said, "Ivan dear, it's time for you to get up. You have school in about an hour and a half.
She didn't have to tell him twice, as he was already awake and thinking of Lila. He stared at the ceiling, and thoughts of her soft hair in the breeze, her bright sparkling eyes, and happy laughter made him smile.
He got out of bed and went to the bathroom to clean up. He went through the normal routine: showering, brushing his teeth, fixing his hair, making sure that he looked perfect enough to please his father's expectations. Ivan wore his uniform and dusted off the uniform's blazer so his dad wouldn't have a fit about him not being hygenic for no reason. Ivan stood and studied himself in the mirror.
"Is this what she would like? Am I muscular enough? Am I tall enough? Are my eyes bright enough to match hers?" he pondered.
Ivan snapped out of it eventually and headed downstairs. He sat down with his parents at the dining table and ate his breakfast in silence. His mother smiled at him from across the table as she sipped her tea. His dad read the newspaper and drank his coffee with the same grim face as usual.
Ivan's father folded his newspaper and looked at Ivan.
"We're planning on giving fewer but larger tests. You'll still have quizzes, projects, and homework, but they'll count for less. What do you think?" he asked him.
Usually in these situations Ivan could never really give his honest opinion. If he dare oppose his father's ideas, it'll usually end up in an arguement about how he is an incompetent boy and will destory the school when it is in his hands. So Ivan went with the safe choice.
"It sounds like a wonderful idea. I think the school will have a nicer image due to the slight change," he said plastering a fake smile.
"You're right my boy," his father said, "Look Emilia, your son is finally getting some sense into his head."
His mother nodded and smiled, "He's always been smart boy."
Ivan's mother defending him and his father referring to him 'your son,' it wasn't always like this. They used to be close and happy. But one day, suddenly everything changed. Ivan was not sure what had happened, but whatever it was, it ended up changing his whole life completely. His family dynamic was down the drain and he saw Lila less and less.
Ivan finished up his breakfast and got in the car with his dad and headed off to school.
As usual, he stepped out of the car infront of the the main building's entrance and smile. He took a few steps forward and looked over to the side.
There she is.
Her hair in a ponytail with a few strands framing her face. She was sitting with another girl who he didn't recognize, but whatever was going on, it made her happy. She smiled. She glowed. She seemed to be doing well and that's what mattered. Even if his wish didn't come true, he just hoped that she'll remain happy and untouched by the cruelty of the world.
"Hey Ivannn," said a familiar voice.
Ivan turned his head to see Devon, his only close-ish friend at Alderidge Academy. He knew he could rely on him if all else fails.
"Hey Dev," Ivan said smiling.
"How's it going doll?" a sickeningly sweet voice said from behind him.
"Oh.. it's you Chanel. I didn't see you there," He said giving a small laugh.
"Chanel it's only 7:45 am and you're already flirting can you please take a break?" said Devon laughing.
"Will you please stop it Devonnn," she whined, fake hitting him on the shoulder.
"More importantly, how's it feel to captain of the soccer team for the third year in a row Ivan?" asked Devon.
"Nothing special, it feels the same responsibility wise I guess?" Ivan replied.
"Nothing special? You're the only one crazy enough to say that. You're one lucky bastard, you know that right? Anyone would kill to be you," Devon joked.
"I hope not Dev, that would not be enjoyable" Ivan said laughing.
"You'll sit with us at lunch again, won't you Ivan?" asked Giselle.
Chanel rolled her eyes, "Giselle, how many times have I told you? Don't talk to my man."
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that," she said softly.
Devon patted Giselle's shoulder, "It's fine, he's not her man anyways, but I'll still sit with you," he smiled and said.
"Don't indulge her, you know how clingy she gets," Nova says dryly.
Chanel rolled her eyes, "Whatever. By the way, party at Giselle's house tonight. It'll be fun."
The bell rang and students started heading to their classes. Chanel walked past him and brushed his shoulder with her finger, "Hope to see you there."
She winked and walked away, her posse following her not far behind.
Of course he was not going to attend... or so he thought.

This chapter is a little dry. It's short and mostly covers character backgrounds. I'm still trying to set up the story still. I know it's taking a hot minutes, but please be patient with me. I'd love it if you'd vote and comment and give me suggestions! I really want to improve my writing and see your ideas and predictions.
