Lila thought he was her soulmate, that there was nobody better than him. She had known him since she was little and he was the only person I wanted so badly. Hopeless love, painful love, unrequited love, are the really that beautiful? She didn't think they were.
The first day as high school junior wasn't much, but she looked forward to one thing. Fall was beginning to change the colors of the trees. It filled the dull gray classroom with color. Nobody wanted summer to end, but she didn't mind. After all, she'd be able to see him. She knew he was starting his new job here. She never imagined he'd be my homeroom teacher. She was so happy. She'll be able to see him everyday at school now. His name was Luca. That's what she called him outside of school. She always referred to him as her brother, but she never felt that way. She knew he'd always see her as his little sister, but she couldn't help falling for his smile and kindness; his innocence and pure heart.
A couple weeks into the new year, she was helping him print his handouts for class later that day. She was so happy that she could help him. She ran through the hallway to give him the handouts as soon as possible. Lila opened the door, out of breath, but smiling. Madeleine was standing there.
"I've never been very good with them," Luca laughed, smiling.
Madeleine laughed and smiled. Lila stared in surprise. Her happiness drained from my body.
"Luca, it's one of your students," Madeleine said smiling.
"Oh you brought me the handouts. Thanks," Luca said, " Well then, talk to you later Madeleine."
Lila dropped the handouts quickly on his desk, then ran out trying to not to cry. She went to the terrace and stood by the edge and looked out. She felt the wind in her hair and she wished that she could let go of her feelings the same way the wind picked up the falling leaves and took them away. She's been watching Luca for a long time now. That's why she noticed before he did, that he was making a face he'd never made before. Lila couldn't believe that Ms. Madeleine, that middle aged chick could make him feel that way.
Later that night Lila's mom invited him to our house for dinner.
"Can't believe how much Lila has mellowed out," said Luca.
My mom, being the extremely happy and sociable person that she is said, "Oh really? She's just being polite because you're here Luca."
Lila got slightly embarrassed because she talks so much. Luca was used to it because he ate at their house often.
"It's delicious. Your mom is such a great cook Lili," he said smiling, knowing that the childish nickname he had given her would make her smile.
"Oh thank you, but Lila actually helped too. She almost never does," said my mom.
She died with embarrassment, her face turning bright red. This never happened, but after she noticed how she felt about him, Lila couldn't help die over the most meaningless things her mom would say in front of him.
After dinner was finished Lila walked with him back to his house, as she usually did.
"Homemade cooking is the best," Luca said, "It's only me and dad at home. Neither of us can really cook. I need one soon."
'I can't wait to have a wonderful wife.' It's something he'd always say. He'd been saying it since junior high, but he hasn't lately. Is that because he has someone specific in mind now? She knew it wasn't her, but Lila refused to believe it.
