He wanted to know everything. Every single little speck of my childhood and why things happened the way they did.
I was hesitant, but I told him; because I trusted him.
He asked more about Gloria, and how I came about, how it all happened, when it happened.
"When did your dad start working at the station?" He asked, watching my hands carefully while I turned the corner of the school's parking lot.
I thought about it for a second, collecting all of my thoughts into a line. "After it had happened."
Dad and I were home alone in the apartment, watching American Idol on the TV, when there was loud thuds coming from the stairs.
Dad thought it was some drunken teenage couple coming back from a party, maybe someone who just fell? He didn't know.
But I did. It was mom, drunk off her ass just after getting into a strangers car and begging for a ride because she needed to get back to me.
She didn't. I was fine. Dad and I were completely fine.
Gloria banged on the front door that was bolted shut, and her desperate cries for help and the fact that someone was after her shook deep in my stomach while I watched the door rattle.
"Come on Marie, lets get to bed. It's bedtime." Dad said, now shutting off American Idol and helping me to bed.
There was now yelling, coming from the other tenets who were trying to rest, and Gloria had woken them up.
"Marie, c'mon." Dad whispered again, ushering me into my room.
"Mama's outside." I told him, as if he didn't know.
He sat on my bed, avoiding my statement. "Come on. You've got school tomorrow."
Did he not hear her? Were they playing tricks on me? I thought before I was told to get into bed for a third time.
So I obeyed, and I was soon inclosed in four dark walls that built up all around me; not a single flicker of light to be found anywhere.
I heard the door open. Then close. Then Dad yelled as loud as he could at Gloria until there was light.
But not just any light. Red and blue.
Flashing now, the almost purple color hit my window and I jumped free of my bed, stumbling back out into the living room where I saw them.
Two police officers standing in the door with Mom in handcuffs taking her away.
She screamed, and Dad stood still with his hand over his mouth.
I cried. Dad cried. Gloria cried.
"After someone called the cops and she went to jail for theft, alcohol abuse, and a whole bunch of other shit, my dad made a promise to himself that he could do everything in his power to protect me from her; if that makes sense."
