Virginia's POV
I hesitated for a second, my brain functioning at hyper speed as I rushed through the events of the morning, the comfortable but domineering way Derek took control of the situation, and the twinkle in Jake's eyes as he helped me out of the car. Somewhere in the dark, dusty recesses of my mind a caution flag waved, reminding me that this was my boss—or bosses, if they were business partners—and to proceed carefully.
Crossing my arms, I looked coolly from Derek to Jake and back again. "Cute," I admitted with a smirk. "But there's no way the three of us are fitting through that door all at once," I added, nodding towards the oak door at the top of the stairs.
Without another word, I squeezed between the two men's outstretched arms and took my time scaling the wide steps. I stopped and turned to look back with my hand on the door handle.
"Derek?" I chirped.
He raised an eyebrow at me, and I smirked as I watched him drag his eyes off my backside with some effort.
"I believe I was promised breakfast?" I swung the door open and stepped inside, then stuck my head back out and added, "Jake?"
I almost laughed as his honeyed eyes snapped into focus from where they had also clearly just been fixated on my ass. "It would be great if you could join us, I'd love to get to know you a bit before we start working together too" before disappearing into the foyer and letting the door click softly shut behind me.
I stepped forward into the large, welcoming foyer, dominated by two huge stone fireplaces facing each other from opposite sides of the great room.
Off to one side I could hear voices and dishes rattling against one another, obvious signs of food service, so I set off in that direction, eyeing a hostess podium near a set of heavy doors that matched the entry.
As I neared the hostess, a friendly looking black girl with glasses, I heard a commotion behind me and turned back to the front door just in time to see Derek and Jake clambering through the double doors in unison, laughing and grabbing each others' shirts in fruitless attempts to gain the lead in entering the building.
The sight made me giggle, and I turned to the hostess to share my mirth, sure she would think it hilarious to see her bosses engaged in such childish behavior, but instead I was shocked to see her eyes wide and wary, as if she feared one or both of the men I was laughing at.
Furrowing my brow, I stepped closer to her and reached a hand across the podium, touching her arm gently. "Hey, is everything okay?"
"Huh?" She shook her head slightly as if to clear it before resting her eyes on me, still wide with trepidation.
"Yeah! Oh, sorry. I thought they were really mad for a second." She shuddered at the words suddenly, making my frown go deeper.
"They're both SO scary when they get mad... all the bosses are."
She eyed the men again warily as they struggled further into the foyer, Derek held in a headlock by Jake, and Jake's shirt twisted up and around his waist, revealing solid abs and a trickle of hair above his belt.
Rolling my eyes, I glanced back at the girl, noticing her name tag "Tasha" and offering her a reassuring smile.
"Tasha, why don't you go take a quick break while I handle—this." I said sweetly as I gestured at the scene in front of us.
She nodded quickly and scurried through the doors into the dining room, which I could see from a glance was practically empty.
Good. I don't need an audience.
Then I took a step forward and reached a hand into my hobo bag, fishing around until I felt what I was looking for.
At last my hand brushed against the cool metal and I wrapped my finger around the trigger firmly before pulling my hand out of my bag and pointing in the direction of the two entwined men.
I screwed up my own eyes against the deafening sound and prepared myself for the aftermath as I pulled the trigger on the keychain air horn.
Ahhhhhhhh!!!! Sorry such a short chapter but I needed a place to transition and this felt like it!
