“alright guys, let’s go back to the top.” Mr. Delmar says through the microphone. I let out a sigh and turn around, dropping my flute to my side.
marching band in the morning is almost never fun. it’s always freezing cold and no matter how many layers you wear, you’ll always be wondering if you have frostbite.
we run through Eleanor Rigby again and somehow, the clarinets manage to mess it up again even though we’ve gone through this a million times.
“those damned clarinets can never get it right.” Elaine says. we’ve been friends since middle school and have somehow stuck together for all these years.
“tell me about it. the sooner we get done, the sooner I can go inside and get my coffee.” I close my eyes and imagine holding the hot coffee up to my lips.
“you’re lucky the school sells coffee,”
“if it didn’t, I would kill myself.”
after that, we’re forced to start again. by now, I’ve basically perfected the set. we move a lot in the set, but it’s usually just walking in one direction so it’s easier to remember.
eventually though, we finish and are left to return our instruments to their cases. I quickly get my coffee, trying not to be late to first period. but of course, I was late.
by the time that I got there, I found out that we were getting a new seating chart, meaning that I won’t be sitting next to Marina, this girl who basically thinks that she’s better than everyone else.
“thanks for joining us, Laurel. you’re sitting next to Luke.” Mrs. Stone says, nodding her head towards the blonde boy. when he looks over at me, my breath hitches.
he's the guy I would always look at in the hall that I found utterly attractive.he's the guy that I wanted to talk to for months but never got the courage to walk up to him and actually do it.
and now I'm sitting next to him.
