My dear Anna,

Nothing pains me greater than to love you as I do. No matter the past, present, or the life to come, Anna, I will love you until the day my judgment comes to claim me. You would never truly understand why I did what I did, for I myself know only its surface. The love I bear for you is dark, crazy, and uncontrollable. What I've done was always to protect you; protect yourself from me. I grieve for what you will come to think of me after coming to know of this. I cannot blame you for despising me all the more, but I beg you to realize that what we shared, however futile it may have seemed, was the truth of ourselves, hidden from the light of good and an escapee of the shadows of wrong. It shall haunt me for my days come but it would be the only brightness in this dreary life. You are my love, whether you have accepted it or not, Anna. Spare us our fate and forget my existence, and wed a man knowing it will shatter all my heart. A fair punishment indeed, for the dishonor I've brought my family and the anguish in your tender heart.

Hans, your beloved, your loathed.
